Wrap a big box of diapers. I did this for his second Christmas and he was barely a year old. I also wrapped wipes. David didn't understand presents until *sort of* three, but not really until four.
I bought necessities. It made zero difference to him!
Eh. I wouldn't get anything. She can play with the wrapping paper from your gifts :-) My three year old definitely gets the idea of gifts. But that first year or so? Not at all.
Or, books. There is no such thing as too many board books. (DD has more than 100 and I still got bored of the repetition).
I put stuff in her stocking so that I could take pictures while she pulled the stuff out. Other than that, I don't think we got her presents for her first Christmas.
We bought C maybe one or two things her first Christmas. I took advantage of having one last Christmas where it could still be a bit more about us than her. lol
I spent $3 on my son's first Christmas. He was also 6 months old. He got so much from others that we didn't feel the need. I bought him a bouncing ball with glitter and a light inside. When it bounced the light would start going. He liked it. He grew to like some hand puppets of animals that grandpa gave him. Those things were really awesome because as he grew we moved from just making sounds to actually making stories up with the puppets.

Ok, for real, I just looked at Charlie's wish list and some of the things on there are a wagon, mirror and rainbow water blocks, crayon rocks, ALEX Toys flash cards, touch and feel books, clear bins for sensory boxes, a balancing/stacking toy and clothes among other things.
Last year DD was nearly 6 months. I got her some bath toys and a Swarovski ornament (family tradition), some sippy cups and some see through balls that had different spinners and such in them. This year my niece is 6 months and I bought her this: www.amazon.com/B-Parum-Pum-Drum-Lime/dp/B003WE34HC

OMG you're a genius. I'm so doing this just so I can have gifts under the tree!

Yes! I definitely wanted the look of gifts for pictures, lol. But I was cheap. Plus, damn, how much does a baby possibly need?
I think more sippy cups and teething biscuits are also a great idea.
The boys got a gate thing b/c they were just starting to pull up (9m almost at Christmas), a ball popper, and an activity cube. Books. And then traveling highchairs lol.
We got Theo a Mozart music cube, vtech spin and learn. Some driving toy. Clothes, pacifiers, teething rings, some small rubber toys that he can chew on, bath foam toys, some wooden caterpillar thing. I feel like I'm forgetting some stuff.
L will be 3 months old and isn't getting a damn thing.
She doesn't care so neither do I. Other people are buying her stuff so I'm saving money by not having to buy her stuff while I can get away with it. When she does care, I will have so much fun with it.

DD was 6mo at her first Christmas. I got her:
a cookie monster doll a yo gabba gabba book a chicken - it had a blow up ball inside with a jingling ball inside of that a play mat a baby einstein piano
Your BMB chick can get whatever she wants, but $1K in gift for a 6 month old that doesn't include chipping into a college fund seems silly to me.
I'm guessing it includes some big ticket items like a jogging stroller, a second car seat, etc. though. That would add up quickly without being a huge mound of presents.
It seems like there is sort of a smugness in spending as little as possible for your baby's first Christmas. I know it is frivolous, but it's fun. It's okay to be impractical!
Yeah. I realize I went overboard and he's going to care about exactly nothing but the wrapping paper at first, but he will enjoy the toys later. Hell, Sofia still enjoys playing with the toys she got her first Christmas. Meh.

Eh. With DD I was in a sleep deprived newborn blur. Showing up with clothes on was all I could handle. With this one, we'll be fresh out of the hospital post partuum. It never occurred to me to get her a gift. All I want for Christmas is a glass of champagne. Don't worry. I'll share that with her.
Of course, I'm the one who believes in ditching the baby for the first birthday and just celebrating as adults. I'm generally a baby scrooge.

I really just wanted to save money. David's first Christmas, he was six weeks old and I swear, gifts didn't even cross my mind, lol. Not even kidding.

My son is 6 months and he is getting lots of board books, a set of three classic Fisher Price toys (a xylephone, stacking rings, and a box with with square/circle/star holes to stick the shapes through), a walker toy, and a little ride on car that we can push him around on.

DS was 6 months for Christmas and we didn't get anything for him, mostly because the grandparents went nuts with gifts. This year I got him a bunch of socks, which I will wrap in individual boxes, and board books. He will be stoked.
