My sis had a half this morning in the same area that my DH was going to do his 10 miler, so I drug my butt out of bed, made some signs, and took myself and my boot down there. It was a small local race, with maybe 5 or 600 people for the 8K and half combined, so I was just about the only person out there. Except for a guy and his 3 kids a little way down that set up a pirate water station. So cute!
But it was awesome! Runners really seemed to appreciate the signs and kept thanking me for being there. It was really neat to see the winners (8K winner came in a around 30 min, half in around 1:15) and the back of the packers. And my sister appreciated the cheering and signs with her name. She runs a lot of local races and her DH doesn't come out, so she's never got anybody cheering for her. It was a ton of fun and I'm so glad I took a couple of hours to do it.
My only regret is that I couldn't get my hands on a cowbell.
DD and I volunteered at a local race last month and we had so much fun. We waited until the back of the pack people were coming around to let her hold out cups of water, and she was so excited. She kept saying "mommy, they picked me" when they would take water from her. We'll definitely do it again when it's warmer out.
That's awesome! I ran a leg of the CA international marathon last weekend, and the spectators were the best part. I resolved to get my butt out to do the same.

That's awesome! I just got back from cheering on my DH in a very snowy 5K. I was very bummed that the people around me were only cheering for their people. DS was so cute, getting into it with me. My favorite line of his was, "You know what you're doing? You're doing great!"
Yay for fans!! You can get that cow bell for the next race. Now where you get one, I'm not quite sure.
Why www.cowbell.com, of course! (I'm not kidding! Great site! Lots of my friends have bought good quality cowbells from there.) Ebay is another good source.
