There's something kind of nostalgic about the tradition of sending an actual card, so I'd be sad to see that fall away to people just c&ping their contacts list into a website and hitting send. It seems so impersonal and "I can't be bothered to take the time for this." I'm not bothered by the photo post-cards with no personalized note at all, but the email wouldn't sit well. But I love sending and receiving Christmas cards, so there's that.

I have done Christmas cards via email - though it wasn't through a website, I put together a letter with a bunch of pictures through the year and included it as an attachment.
If you're talking about one of those cheesy cards with animation, that feels like a cop-out to me. If it's more of an album style with a couple pictures, it feels like less of a cop out.
I do agree with @smace though that the amount of money to mail things is getting ridiculous, especially if you have a large amount of people to send cards and/or gifts to. We're combining birth announcements and Christmas cards this year, and we'll have spent about $200 when all is said and done. It makes me cringe.
