I was curious about this too. I'm also curious how much people think is too much to spend on a ring. I know it is all relative to your income. But honestly, unless you have a ton of disposable income, I think it is silly to spend more than $10K on a piece of jewelry. There are so many things I'd rather do with that money (travel, buy furniture, put it towards a DP, etc). I also would feel very strange to have something that valuable on me all the time, like I'd be a target for getting robbed.

I once had a 5k ring. It was stressful to wear, and I purposely lost it at one point to not have to stress about that actually happening. Not surprisingly, that relationship failed.
I now have no e-ring, and am quite fine with it. Also a lot less stressed.

Couldn't you say this about any amount of money spent on a piece of jewelry? Why isn't it weird to spend $2K on a piece of jewelry?
Also, incomes vary widely, and quite a few MMers have a HHI > $200K.
My e-ring is a diamond solitaire with what I think is about an average-sized diamond (0.75 carats). My friends who are getting married now often have much larger e-rings, because we were a year out of college when we got engaged. Oh well.

This is weird to me. Do you have a lot of anxiety in general?
I didn't even know how much DH spent until last week when we were switching safes and I finally looked at the paperwork. It wasn't a secret, but I didn't feel the need to know, he handled all of the insurance, etc stuff.

Holy F! I don't know if I am more shocked over the downpayment amounts or the e-ring amounts! My e-ring is worth $8K, but it's a family stone, so only cost around $2K.

Hahaha!!! No, but I did in that relationship. He had a lot of anger issues. In retrospect, the fake losing was also not an intelligent move on my part, and I should have realised that a person who could blow that easily about property would not make a good life companion.
I actually think people should spend whatever the hell they want on a ring if they feel it's important and can afford it. I lose things, and nothing burns more than losing something expensive so I opt for cheaper.

You can purchase valuable personal property insurance to cover lost jewelry.
