If you can't see my ticker, I'm 24 weeks pregnant and my bump is super duper obvious.
I'm a substitute teacher and the job is for a longer assignment although the dates on the job posting were ASAP-TBD so I don't know if it's a 2 week job or a 5 month job. Last time I did one of these longer assignments it was just for 2 weeks to cover for a teacher who was recovering from surgery. If the job is longer than 3 months, I couldn't accept it anyway.
I didn't mention my being pregnant on the phone. Should I email the principal and mention it/inquire about how long the assignment would be? I feel like it would be a waste of time (hers and mine) if the assignment was until the end of June and I couldn't accept it even if it was offered. I feel like the standard advice is to not mention the pregnancy at all until there is a job offer but is it different because it is just a short term posting.
If it says until the return of the teacher in our board it means that we genuinely don't know when the teacher will return. So yes, it could be 10 weeks, or it could go til the end of June. The only ones that are listed as June 29th (or whatever) are mat leaves, because then it is fairly clear that the teacher is taking til the end of the year.
Even if you mention it they would still have to interview, because to offer you an interview and then pull it back because you said you were pregnant would be grounds for a grievance. As to whether you get it or not? Honestly, if you were the best candidate I might give it to you, especially if I knew the reasons why the teacher was away.
Another thing to consider is that I find, in a lot of cases, people know who they want to hire, even in the case of an LTO, but have to interview 5 candidates either way...I know it sucks but that is the reality.
The principal may genuinely not be able to tell you the length of the LTO, but then again, like with your previous case, they may have an idea.
FWIW, we hired a secretary for a permanent position this fall even though she is leaving on mat leave at the end of this week. She was worth it, I love her.
