When do you exchange gifts with your SO/DH if you are traveling for the holidays?
DH and I will be with my family for Xmas (12/23 - 12/28). In the past we've opened gifts before going to see my family, but now I'm wondering if we should bring our gifts with us. It might be nice to actually open them on Christmas. We will be driving to space isn't an issue.
What do you all do? Open at home before or after or bring the gifts along?

We used to bring them. Now, with DS, it's easier to just open them at home the day before we leave instead of bringing everything. Mostly, it depends on the size of the gifts.
We've always opened them with my family, who we are with on Christmas morning. Sometimes we saved one for the ILs house a day or two before or after. This year we are skipping gifts.
We might bring one thing this year, if it's small, but mostly we'll do ours before we leave on the 23rd. DS's big presents are also getting left because I don't want to drag a Little Tykes bbq on a 7 hour drive for no reason - he'll surely get other gifts that need to use the space.
We do ours before, but may save a gift for when we get back. Though we usually are back by the 26th. Now with kids, we will probably do all before we leave. They will get plenty of stuff at the grandparents/extended family, so don't plan on taking presents with us to open.
We don't do an official exchange of gifts, so I don't really know. But I think if we did, I would want to exchange them before we left or even after we got back so that it could be just the two of us.
