Ugh, I totally blanked and got a spiral sliced honey ham at the grocery store the other day. I meant to cook it this evening. Charlie will be 12 months in 3 weeks. I know the conservative estimate is to hold off on honey until after a year at least. Would you serve it to her or find something else for her or just freeze the dang thing?

Ha, I would need to just offer her an alternate protein, which I would need to find. We're leaving on vacation in 4 days, so I'm trying to use up all of our groceries, rather than buy new ones.
Woah I made ham a few weeks ago and didn't think about it. I dont even know if it had honey in it or not. My pedi recommended waiting until 2 for honey. I'll have to be more careful, that's scary.
I would not. That was the ONLY thing that was drilled into my head and I followed it. No honey until 1. My friend works in a pediatric ICU and has seen infants with botulism. Not worth the risk.
And ditto, cooking it doesn't kill the botulism spores.
What?! What's so funny? That's what I do when I need a quick protein for J.
And yeah, cooking it won't kill the spores if they are present. Toxins break down easier but it has to be really hot to kill the spores. I also don't think honey pasteurization gets to that high of a heat. I think it just gets hot enough to kill yeast. Buuut again, 1 year is a conservative guideline so it is probably fine. I still wouldn't do it b/c I am nuts and have a real paranoia about botulism anyway.
Keep in mind a spiral ham is pre cooked, right? So the honey glaze has already been heated at least once.
Can you serve the ham from the inner most of the piece and avoid giving the edge where most of the honey would have been?
I know that higher heat is needed to kill botulism than what we cook at but this is how I justified it too. I gave them spoonfuls of honey at 19m for sore throats but before that it was just in things that were processed/cooked.
Flawed logic! Totally! But whatever, it made me feel better haha.
