Can you have constipation with diabetes? (that is the only thing that I think connects with sweet breath). Where is Sake when you need her??
I know I'm late to this, but I wanted to chime in. When I first saw your title earlier, my mind instantly went to diabetes because sweet breath is also a major symptom. I did a little looking on the ADA's website because the other symptoms she's exhibiting are how they diagnosed me at 14 and it looks like constipation and diabetes can and are related (link) The getting up multiple times a night to pee, excess drinking and tiredness are also symptoms.
Like PP's said, it could be nothing and I hate to alarm you, but I'd think it would be worth checking on with her ped becuase it can be life threatening.
Has her vision worsened significantly lately? That is also a symptom.
and duh, I hope she feels better! Keep us updated.
Her vision is fine as far as we know from her 4 year well visit.
She just woke up with a night terror or something. She was awake but seriously not making any sense. talking about dragons and dinosaurs and drinks (we read a dino book before bed and she watched a How To Train Your Dragon episode this evening), it's like her brain was scrambling information. It took a long time to get her settled. She had wet her pants, so we changed those.
then she had an ice pop and is back to bed with tons of covers on her. She has been feeling cold today, normally she runs on the warm side. No fever or anything.
Gah, this all sucks.
And, I just want to thank everyone for chiming in, truly. I did test her ketones in her urine with strips and the seem to be coming down. Is that something that can go down even in diabetics?
cleo29, yeah they can come down on their own if they're not too high. They come down with drinking water (mine come down quicker when I chug water in combo of taking my insulin). Keep her hydrated, being dehydrated is the worst thing with diabetes (not saying it is, but just to play it safe)
Does she frequently wet the bed or is this unusual for her? This is also a sign, so that's why I'm asking. I never had that issue, but several Type 1's I know do when theirs is running high for a long time.
I'll be up for a while, PM/tag me if you need anything!

I would say in the last year she has started having accidents. Usually she wets her underwear either a little or a lot and sometimes wets the bed. this time it was enough to wet her underwear and dampen her pajama bottoms. She generally wakes up 1-3 times a night to pee, usually it is twice. This does not change if we cut off fluids by x time before bed and I would say it seems like it is getting worse, but honestly I don't know if that is truth or perception.
She tends to drink a fair amount. Today she was very thirsty and tired. But given the weekend, that does not totally surprise me. Her ketones were 80 at the doctor. After getting fluids they have dropped. Her breath is still sweet though even after eating foods and brushing teeth.
For me her breath is what is kind of scaring me. She has never had it with an illness. But I don't know.It seems that so many things can share symptoms, you know?

I'd mention the bed wetting to her ped if you decide to call them and talk to them. Because they don't change with cutting off fluids like you said, it makes sense it could be diabetes related.
TBH, I'm kind of surprised they didn't seem alarmed or at least alerted when he ketones were 80. I don't have much experience with testing for them as I don't get that high very often but it looks like anything over 80 is considered high (I can't even remember the last time I needed to test my ketones) but it might be different in kids than adults, so 80 might be okay since they are coming down.
That's the trouble with diabetes. The symptoms can be attributed to something else and something else can be seen as diabetes. It's frustrating. If her ketones are coming down, that's REALLY good and it means that she's not in danger or anything. Like you said, it could just be she got dehydrated and is sick and it's nothing (which is what I hope it is) but, it's better to be safe, right?
Definitely! Her pedi was not as worried about her ketones because her urine was pretty concentrated. I had not noticed her breath at that point. I will call first thing in the morning and let them know, especially if it is still present and see about testing her sugars.
I would rather be safe and rule something out than not and have her suddenly be really sick.

Oh that makes sense then! I hope it's nothing and that she's feeling better soon!

I hope it is nothing, good luck.
I do want to add that I am glad I am not the only one that thinks newborns have sweet breath. I mentioned it to someone the other day and they thought I was a weirdo.

You are not alone. I loved just breathing in her breath when she was tiny.

im here!!!! I was just catching up on all of this and getting ready to post something, then you sent out the sake bat signal! haha
I wasn't constipated prior to being diagnosed, but I did have intestinal issues (similar to IBS) that seemed to clear up once my blood sugar was under control.
I am paranoid as fuck about G getting/having undiagnosed diabetes, so I would definitely take her in and have them check her blood sugar or even urine for elevated sugar levels....

So far they are telling me that they are not concerned since she did not have sugars in her urine. Her ketone was 80mg, but her urine was pretty concentrated, so that is why they are saying they are not alarmed.
We shall see what the day brings and what they want us to do. I do want to get started on the miralax so that she can start getting some relief.

Poor thing! I hope she gets to feeling better soon! Constipation is no fun, especially when you're little, and would much rather be playing!!
If it turns out to be more than constipation, you definitely have people here that are very knowledgeable about things, and definitely can be here to support you!
Thanks. They finally got the stuff from radiology and gave the go ahead for miralax. If her breath is still sweet on Thursday or Friday, they will want to test her urine again.
Poster from H&F chiming in. My H has T1 and I am hyper-vigilant with my kids because I worry about them. If you feel in your gut that something else is going on, you can get a basic blood glucose monitor over the counter at any drug store for less than $20. It'll come with a few test strips and the lancet so you can give her a quick finger prick (after waiting an hour after food/anything but water) and rule out a high blood sugar. We've tested our big kid before because she was exhibiting some symptoms (she was fine). At least you can feel more comfortable from a diabetes perspective waiting until Th/F.
Ya, the reason this post brought me out of my long-time lurkdom is that I have a family member with type 1 (and I am a nurse) and your little girl's symptoms concerned me. I hope that miralax works quickly and that all this crummy stuff is relieved as she gets less constipated! If it were me, I would ask the pedi if I could bring her in for a quick blood sugar check, or even buy a cheap kit like someone suggested. It is such a quick and easy thing to do, and would bring me so much peace of mind if I were in your shoes. Hoping that this is all nothing serious, and over soon for you both!

I also am a nurse and these symptoms concern me as well; please INSIST your pediatrician take this seriously and check her blood sugar (ie:check for diabetes). We are not trying to scare you, but this can become a very dangerous situation if not treated, as the saying goes it is better to be safe than sorry.
