After my first marathon, I was so sore I needed to take almost a week off. Then I returned for two regular 20/25 mile weeks. After that I got sick. Bronchitis, stomach bug and sinus infection. Missed two whole weeks and was mentally feeling terrible. Would drive by runners and feel jealous, so stir crazy and scared about the lost fitness. Was coughing so much, no way I could run. Ran Sunday and felt great and ran today. Even though today was the treadmill, I felt so elated. My pace was faster. So maybe sometimes things just work out and I needed this break to rest my body and appreciate running.
Yay! Glad you had a good run. I'm always amazed at how little fitness my body actually loses. It probably winded up being a blessing in disguise. It gave your body the rest it likely needed after the marathon.
Granted I've never run a marathon and being sick throws a kink in things, but I often find that I am actually faster/better after having a break. Sounds like just what your body needed!
