My MIL gave me The Namesake last Thanksgiving and I read it this week, and I really enjoyed it. However, I think this could easily be a book that some people would outright hate.
It's one of those books where the story kind of meanders through the day-to-day lives of the characters, and I have a hard time actually describing the plot. But at the same time I felt like I fell into their lives and I wanted to just keep reading to see how things would turn out, and if the characters would find the happiness they'd been seeking their whole lives.
It's almost like I was reading the life story, or diary, of a close relative who had passed away. A few tears, a few smiles, and a long journey of life relayed in a matter of fact way.

I really enjoy Jhumpa Lahiri. I thought her opening of The Namesake was brilliant--the details as the protagonist's mother is cooking, from the kitchen to what she's making, was evocative. She deals with the immigrant experience/identity issues so deftly, in my opinion. I hope she has something else coming out soon.

Jhumpa Lahiri is one of my favorite writers. I read everything I can get my hands on by her.
On a different note, did anyone see the movie the Namesake? I think it's on Netflix instant play. I thought it was okay. Of course, I liked the book better.
