When I lived in TN my friend was asked in a restaurant what kind of Coke she wanted. And one of the kinds of Coke offered was Pepsi. "Pepsi Coke" was offered with a completely straight face!

Here is a handy map showing "safe" areas of the country versus places where your ears are more liable to be assaulted by non-soda types
Yellow = correct Blue = incorrect Red = stupid Green = "other" Lord only knows what this could be. Those folks are probably too busy handling snakes to pause for refreshment.
I would like to point out that the title says "soft drink." The NYT said that I am right. If it's not coke, it's a soft drink.
I think we're mostly in the "army green" states, which is 80-100% "soda". I just read the map right for the first time! I thought we were slowly converting and was surprised.
FI used to call it pop until I told him he was wrong. He now calls it soda (against his will, I believe). He said that pop makes more sense because that's the sound that a bottle or can makes when you open it.
