If a person has ever had chickenpox, they should be fine, and the risk of getting shingles is minimal. Dont risk it though - I had shingles a while ago and wanted to DIE!

MIL had shingles when my oldest was little, and we were scheduled to visit them. Both her doc and DDs ped agreed there should be no problem; they just said we should take care not to let her come into contact with any open sores. MIL was super nervous anyway and wore long sleeves and didn't hold DD during the visit, and everything went just fine.

This isn't true. My sister has had chickenpox and shingles both and so has my grandmother.

It is very rare to get shingles from someone. If anything, someone who has no immunity from chickenpox could get chickenpox from the person wit shingles, if and only if they come in contact with any open , oozing pox blisters.
Everyone just wash your hands, and all will be fine. You have to have had the chickenpox in order to get shingles in the first place. The latent virus that lives within you is activated by stress.

But did the get the shingles from each other or someone else. Probably not. The latent chickenpox was reactivated and in turn they developed shingles. They didn't get it from anyone (highly unlikely.

I had it when I was 16 and it hurt like crazy. I had chicken pox but J was only 2 months old and it was a really light case. This was back in the day before immunizations.

You're right. I forgot that it was from reactivated chickenpox.
