This is what i have:
Water Blankets Flashlight Rock salt food snacks batteries Pocket warmers Cell phone chargers
I know we aren't going to be in the middle of nowhere but the projected weather for a road trip from MI to TN looks like it's going to really suck and I want to be prepared, just in case. We already have an emergency roadside assistance kit and a first aid kit that are permanently stored in the van.
Empty coffee can, candle and matches. You put the candle in the can and light it. It will heat your car so maybe get a couple candles. Battery cables can of "de-icer" extra window scraper (in case what you have breaks, possibly a long handled w/brush, short one for really scraping stubborn ice) extra gloves and hats boots small shovel Put some flattened cardboard boxes (big, in the bottom of your trunk. You can pull them out, put them under stuck tires to gain traction. Kitty litter or sand - again, you can put this under tires to get traction.
The coffee can/candles/matches would be the most important of the items above.
Oh, and are you taking 75 down? We're heading up 75 tomorrow, morning--stopped in ky for the night. Flash flooding and high winds so far.
We aren't leaving until Monday morning and we're going to plan our trip according to weather. Tomorrow is packing the car day because we're leaving very early in the morning.
We're expecting an ice storm that's supposed to knock power out all over the place.
I don't know what your final destination is, but I'm right in the middle of MI (Saginaw Co.) and we have a light dusting of snow right now but we won't know how bad it will be until the morning.
