We were in the process of refinishing our hardwood floors that we found after pulling up carpet. Upon lifting it up, it was discovered that there was some pet stains so I tried to google search some suggestions on how to lighten it so we wouldn't have to replace the wood. Well my husband started pressing that we needed to get started on staining in the dining room so I said go for it while I was gone to my sister's house. I came back and he had went over the pet stains I had not treated so I asked him to stop immediately despite the fact that he had just laid a layer of stain down. I was under the impression from someone (can't remember if it was my sister, him or reading online) that the wood will never absorb all of the stain so you can simply just wipe off the stain with mineral spirits. Well, we returned to it a month? later and now that section is darker than both sections on either side of it. Has anyone ever been in a situation like this and been able to fix it without having to resand?
