Platform is Xbox 360. Don't care if it's violent but would prefer it not be one of those games where you're just doing the same thing over and over again, clicking around on maps.

As funny as it sounds, SO brought home the Lego Batman game for us to have a laugh playing and we both really enjoyed it.
It's aimed at kids so you do have to cooperate and work together at times so it won't work if you're looking for something competitive. But it's still super fun.

Ditto Portal 2. It's a lot of fun to play in cooperative mode. Plus the plot line in single player mode is hilarious. Eta: realized this is PS or pc though
I feel stupid when I play Portal 2, because my brain just isn't cut out for that type of thinking. When we play, I just open up portals where DH tells me to.
We've been playing Beyond Two Souls lately and really like it. We play on PS3, not sure if it's available on 360. It's an awesome game though!

Ditto Portal 2 or any of the Lego games. You could always do Peggle, too-- I think you compete against each other if you play it in multiplayer? I can't remember.
We used to play some of the LEGO games together. They work really well as a fun lightweight cooperative.
My favorite was Little Big Planet, but it's PS. "Coopetition" is a great word and oh, so appropriate. A colleague and I used to play together at work, and some days it really degenerated to finding ways to chuck your partner into a pit or blow him up. And other days we got more interested in slapping stickers on each other than actually completing the levels.

How could I forget to mention LBP!? My husband and I regularly have to pause the game because we are laughing so hard!
We usually play the first person shooters like Rainbow Six or Call of Duty. We've played Left 4 Dead and also Dead Island (we have two consoles and two XBox Live memberships). We're going to start playing Battlefield 3 when I get my copy in from eBay.
