I am from the April 2012 moms board, I mentioned doctor who so many times on there, that they directed me here lol. I love everything about space, love scifi movies and shows. I've a vampire show lover as well. My husband appreciates my tastes in these things but doesn't share it, so I hope you will all allow me to come and share my obsessions with you.
Star Trek! I've only seen captain Picard, and I can't imagine watching William shatner, so I haven't committed to the original series yet....I actually have never watched Star Wars.

IMO, I believe everyone should see Star Wars! ORIGINAL THREE ONLY!
I love Picard! But, who doesn't love Patrick Stewart?!
I do want to see Star Wars, My husband keeps saying we'll make a night of it, so maybe New years eve I'll see it ! After I get my fill of the annual New Year's Eve twilight zone marathon.
Welcome:) Total unpopular opinion here but as someone who saw Star Wars as an adult for the first time it was a total let down...sorry I think Lucas is a horrible writer. Great with effects though. Team Picard all the way:p

Hi! I can't watch the original series either, Kirk is just always losing his shirt lol ;-) dh and I tried to go through the series in university but had to skip it after a half dozen episodes. TNG is definitely the best of the star trek tv series.

Did you see it with all that new CG crap? I find it's such a huge distraction. I still own the original trilogy on VHS because I missed the tiny window when Lucas allegedly released the true originals on DVD. (Anyone have pointers for this? Are they still available?)

No I watched it on borrowed VHSs from a friend. I can understand why people were so blown away from the original trilogy as it was a first of its kind in terms of visual effects but the writing is terrible. The fact that the newer trilogy didn't live up to expectations supports my opinion. Everything about those movies was pretty much on par with the originals but now people aren't as impressed with the effects. I'm actually looking forward to what Disney does with the new films now that Lucas is out of the picture and they have a decent director as long as he reins in the lens flares lol.
Welcome! I am not a huge Star Wars fan, but my Dh and DS are huge fans. We own the Dvd version, and my Dh could talk for hours on the universe. He is working his way threw all the Star Wars Universe books. His mom buys him all the ones she can find that were published that year. What kind of Vampires are you?

True blood is my fav vamp show, interview with a vampire is my fave vamp movie, van Helsing too. I'm loving the originals though.

Do you like the books or the show more? I use to love the books, but Lafayette sold me on the show. I love him.

The writing in the original three definitely wasn't original, but it was a classic plot with archetypal characters. That story has been retold for centuries in various forms.
There's some great cinematic analysis out there about what went wrong with the new trilogy. For example, Episode 1 has no clear protagonist, and the plot is technically a convoluted political intrigue about trade negotiations that no one really cares about.
(And one of the things I love is actually the effects in the original. They're so gritty and raw. They actually built those sets and beat them up with sledgehammers to make them look old and worn out. Modern CG still ends up looking too polished a lot of the time - see my Hobbit whine - which makes me appreciate the original effects even more. Except for the claymation tauntauns; they kind of sucked.)
But yeah, there's a lot of hype, and I think it's easy to be disappointed. It helps to have grown up with it, because the characters are like old friends. Or annoying relatives (C3PO).
