a computer nerd question (AMD vs Intel)

I'm rebuilding my computer soon. The motherboard, processor and case are all from 2007. Everything else has been updated on an as-needed basis, but it is past time for the motherboard and processor to be replaced. Sooooo, I'm trying to decide between AMD or Intel for the chipset. I don't really have a preference, though what I have currently is an AMD. I know enough to build my own system, but not enough about the nuance of each choice to really care. Anyone have a preference or want to school me on which is better? We use it as a basic gaming system for civ 5 and sims 3 and the internet browsing. It doesn't have to do anything super fancy.
