Just got back from the doctor for my Achilles second opinion. He was SO GOOD. Took all kinds of time, listened to me, explained everything very well...so much better. Probably because I know him personally, but still. So much better.
The news was not better, though. He said that for the pain to come back that quickly after such a long break is indicative of more serious injury to the tendon. So he ordered an MRI to "make sure it's what we think it is" and said I need to rest it again, but "rest differently." You know...in a boot. He said it generally takes about three months. I asked him what I could do for fitness and he said for now to continue on with what I'm doing, since the boot means nothing.
I sort of knew it was coming, so I'm not terribly upset. I'm more upset about the races (like I already talked about)...the timing of it (he's going out of town for two weeks) means I probably will be okay to go to Tinkerbell and do my best to walk/run those two races. But Princess is probably out (and what to do with that? I'm rooming with a friend and don't want to leave her hanging on the room, but I'm not going down there just to not run). And so is the May marathon. And so is any kind of fall BQ attempt.
And I feel terrible because I'm already gaining weight and generally feeling crappy about myself; what's that going to be like for three months?!? I know I should wait for the MRI, but it sounded like he knew where I was going to end up, so I'm just trying to prepare myself for it. Bleh. Happy fucking 2014.
Ugh, I'm so sorry. I was crossing all fingers and toes for you. Yay for the MRI though! It's great that you'll have a clearer picture and know that you're not just guessing at what it is.
I'm really sorry about the spring races. I think you just have to take one thing at a time. I know we all laugh about this, but what about aqua jogging? Desperate times? When is the MRI?
I'm so so sorry. I was really hoping you'd hear something more positive this time. I think you kind of have to keep doing what you're doing now - focus on some other forms of exercise, try to enjoy them, and remember the big picture of getting healed properly so you can enjoy running for a long time to come. I know, easier said than done. It really sucks.

I'm so sorry. Injuries are the worst. The two months off that I had to take off really did help me and helped me find other workouts instead of running. I think overall that helped me the most. To not always rely on my running. I really hope this is quick for you. I know it's frustrating!!
So sorry. Injuries suck. Isn't there a post earlier where you mention swimming? That's good for fitness when you can't run. Also biking may still be an option despite the boot.
Awww, I'm sorry! I know it sucks, but three months will go by faster than you think. Get yourself better for the summer and you can be ready for those fall races. Hugs!!!
Dammit! I'm so glad you liked this Dr, but what a shitty situation. I'm so sorry . If you can stand to do a few things other than running, I think you will be pleased with how quickly your running fitness will return. You're so talented.
I'm sorry. That really stinks. I'm glad you like your doctor though. Better to know and get it fixed, rather than playing the guessing game for a few more months. Hugs.
I'm so sorry! I was in your same shoes (boot) this exact time last year, except that it took me until the beginning of February to find a good doctor- finding a good doctor who understands your need to run is half the battle.
The boot is a game changer. I'm not going to lie and tell you that it's easy, but I will tell you to make a plan- NOW. Make plan about how you are going to stay fit. Ask specific questions about what you can and can't do in certain activities (i.e. cycling: can I stand to climb hills? are you just talking about spin class? how long can I cycle?) You don't want to push things, but you don't want to give yourself excuses either.
I had a stress fracture through my heel and I could still cycle (no standing), swim (no pushing off the wall with injured foot) and do yoga. I still gained weight, it was inevitable, but I was able to come back quicker and stronger than I thought- I also stay (relatively) sane.
For now ::BIG HUGS:: and just think of this as a time to work on your weaknesses so that when you come back you will be even more badass then ever!

I am sorry too! Injuries are the worst and I'd be really upset as well. But I'm glad you trust him and got sound advice. I'm sure you will find some new workouts to enjo and come back to running that much stronger.

I'm sorry it wasn't a more positive outlook, but at least you've found a doctor you trust to find the right solution for you. I hope the next few months go quickly for you.
