We went for my cousin's college graduation (Sierra Nevada College). We basically just hiked around the lake, had a picnic and shopped in Heavenly Village.
We ate at a couple of good restaurants. If you are interested, I could probably dig up the names of them.

I live about an hour away. Kayaks or stand-up-paddleboarding is definitely a great way to see the lake. If you're not too athletic, there are boat tours (even a dinner cruise, I think) which is another great way to go, or you could rent jet skis. You might also like hiking or exploring the local state parks. SLT has a lot of casinos and is more "city"-like, whereas the NLT towns - Homewood, Truckee, etc - are more quaint in nature.
If it's reasonable for you to do so, you might like to take the Gondola at Squaw up to the top of the mountain. The views there are amazing.
Something to be aware of is that even in the summer, it can be pretty cold at night/in the mornings. I went up for an OWS in August last year and at race start - about 8am, it was 45 degrees out. The overnight temp was in the 30s. So pack accordingly.
If you'll have a rental car, you may also want to consider driving US 50 down to Placerville or taking 89 up towards Sierraville. Placerville has lots of historical stuff to see and do, plus a bunch of small, family owned farms/orchards called Apple Hill - it won't be apple season, but there's still lots to see and do. The drive up towards Sierraville is breathtaking, but there's not a whole lot going on there.
