So I'm in San Diego with my family and I'm refusing to go to Sea World (thanks to The Cove for opening my eyes to the situation). I'm currently working on getting my brother to watch the documentary. Have any of you seen it or refuse to go to similar places because of animal cruelty?
I just don't like the idea of such smart animals doing tricks for food in small enclosures with loud audiences. I'm glad to know that they do good too!

I can somewhat agree with you, but I also think that since they are so smart, they just wouldn't do the tricks if they didn't want, KWIM? I think maybe the animals think its fun. (?) Maybe I sound all puppies and rainbows or something... But its like show dogs. They know what's up. Not all their animals are chosen to be in shows, just like not all dogs would be good in a show dog competition. Some of the animals don't fair well with that kind of environment or respond to what they're asking, I don't think they force them to perform if they dont.
I enjoy SeaWorld because I know they do a lot of good things for wildlife and their animals. I was pissed that they took away their two free beers/day. Damn Budwiser getting bought out. I liked that program the best
Too bad about the two free beers a day (those words go together rather nice huh). I guess I haven't done enough research about the good that they do.
I don't like animals in captivity (especially very intelligent ones) but I guess it pays off for the education and the conservation aspect. I go to the zoo so I guess that's no different than Sea World.

I believe, I don't know for sure though, that the large majority of the animals there are rescues. They are animals that will never be able to return to the wild anyways, so they are well taken care of and loved.
I love Sea World! I attribute walking around the park for 6 hours to O being born before his due date. I'm not sure if you're aware that you can get in free one time a year with your mil ID.

I also saw Cove Wars, and it was horrifying. I already knew the situation was bad since I would see whale in our local grocery and on menus (but never on the English menu, just the Japanese), but I didn't know it was that bad. And then on top of that my friends wanted me to go see the dolphin show at the little tiny aquarium outside where we lived... ugh.
I don't like zoos, either. Unless they're zoos like Miami or San Diego. I avoided going to the Honolulu zoo for almost a year, until it was free for military day, and I really wish I hadn't gone. I'm mostly the same way about aquariums, but I'm more ok with them as long as they don't have like 20 turtles in a tiny tank, like what I saw in Japan.
Sea World... don't know enough about them, but they at least have large habitats. In general, I boycott the cetacean shows, but I'd much rather Sea World be doing them than a podunk fly-by-night aquarium. I do think seeing those shows can be great tools for getting kids interested in the animals and conservation, or at least that was the impact they always had on me.
Almost all the characters drive me insane, even though I believe what they are doing is moral. H hates them even though he agrees whaling is wrong. He thinks there's some mythical enforcement body that should be taking care of it. I keep demanding to know what LE agency is supposed to do it, which then leads to a conversation about the Pacific Rim and its national/economic relationships, and how we will not upset Japan as they ally themselves away from us and towards China. Then he mutters about politics and calls Sea Shepherd terrorists. Which leads to a fight about what a terrorist really is and how we can't cheapen that word.
Whale Wars = fun times in the Stan house.
Eeek to the terrorist usage but I have to lol because I can picture this conversation between you two in my head. Most of the people are annoying and I think the helicopter pilot is a whiner. Did you see the Viking Shores episodes?
