For people who have filed amendments for past years' federal tax returns due to DOMA, did you do it yourself or find an accountant? I just talked to an accountant and was very underwhelmed at her level of knowledge. I've already mocked it up myself in Turbo Tax, and I'm considering filing that myself instead of paying $500 to have her do it. Or should I consult another accountant?
We used an accountant and do for everything. I just feel better about it.
In our case it was well worth the cost to to have it done right and with such great results! If she seems clueless find someone else. You don't want a mistake on something this important.

We didn't file amended returns, and I'm not sure we will. I'm doubtful it would make enough difference for us to be worth the time it would take us to do it since we've always had separate health insurance (those are the people that I think will benefit the most from filing amended returns). I definitely wouldn't pay someone I was underwhelmed with, though, I'd find someone else or save the $500.

I'm on DW's health insurance, and it looks like we'd have $1300 coming back to us, plus whatever state taxes we'd get back. Amending the state return brought me to my knees, so I think I'm going to try a second accountant. I have so much trouble spending money on tax prep, but our situation keeps getting more complicated and I think it's time for me to give up this duty to someone more experienced.
