Yum yum! I have no idea if this is serious or if I'm setting myself up BUT I have found if you make it with shredded potatoes it's not nearly as greasy.
I have never made it that way, although everyone seems to have a different recipe for what they put in it. I am going to try that the next time I make it (I make it maybe once every few years when I get the craving).
Here is a random recipe I found on Google to give you an idea if you don't know what I'm talking about: ngredients
1 pound ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 1 (10.75 ounce) can Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup (Regular or 98% Fat Free) 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 3 cups frozen Tater Tots
Directions Cook beef and onion in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat until beef is well browned, stirring to break up meat. Pour off fat. Stir soup, ketchup and Worcestershire into skillet. Spoon beef mixture into 12x8-inch shallow baking dish. Arrange potatoes around edge of casserole. Bake at 425 degrees F for 25 minutes or until potatoes are done.
I had a tastier-looking photo but it wouldn't PIP so I stole the one from the recipe page.
EW!
Can I change my vote to "disgusting?" That is NOT the recipe I use! That sounds like it would get soggy and ruin the tots pretty quick. Then you just have creamy meat with ruined tots.
ETA: the kind I am used to ends up being more like a loaded baked potato, but with tots instead of baked potato.

I put the tots on top and they do not get soggy at all. They actually crisp up nicely and I add shredded cheese on top.
I just layer 1lb ground hamb. meat, green beans, shredded potatoes with cream of mushroom soup and shredded cheese on top. I use frozen green beans already cooked because it keeps them crunchy.
The thought of adding ketchup makes me want to hurl.

I love tater tot hot dish. I make it kind of like the recipe that was put up and I put the tater tots on top. They get really crunchy and good. Sometimes I will cook a couple of pieces of bacon, break them up and add them in to the meat mixture.
I'll put ketchup and / or hot sauce on top of the serving (for me at least) and it is certainly not ruined, but I'm sure it depends on what part of the trailer park you're from if you like the Catsup added to your fancy dinner.

If you are white trash, some or all of this has been in or is still in your life:
You have indoor furniture outdoors. You have outdoor furniture indoors. There is a recipe in your family that has been passed for at least a generation in which the biggest ingredient is mayonnaise. You know what ambrosia salad is, and why mini-marshmallows exist. You eat hotdish, cream of crap casseroles, grape jelly meatballs, scrambled eggs with hot dogs & deviled eggs. Someone in your family loves pickled eggs or pickled pig's feet. Pillsbury refrigerated bread products figure largely into your appetizer repertoire. Someone you grew up with was an alcoholic, a meth head or a Jesus freak.
