I used to have down, but switched to an alternative filler because it tends to last longer and is easier to clean. And I've found it to be lighter but just as warm!
I got mine at Ikea (several, actually): mid-range level, cost about $50. We have a queen but I got a king because I like the duvet to hang way down over the sides.
The only advice I have is to get a duvet cover. It is such a pain in the ass to take a big down comforter to the dry cleaner when it gets dirty. So much easier to just remove the duvet and wash it.
I got a king down alternative comforter at jcpenney on black Friday for $30. It's perfect for what we wanted. It's also warmer than I expected and fluffy. Best deal I've gotten in a while.
It's duck down, but it's very warm and has absolutely no odor.
Love it.
Anything that doesn't specify goose down is inevitably duck down which is supposedly not as warm and can smell. This particular comforter has neither of those issues.
