Where are you in your training? How are things going so far? Just finished my peak week. Ran my first solo 20 this weekend and it was good. As good as 20 can be anyway. :-) I wanted to quit so badly at around 7 miles, but powered through and finished strong. One more big mileage week to go in two weeks, after I cut back a bit and race a HM this weekend. I'm ready for taper to get here already!

This is my ideal strategy, and what worked well for me on marathon #4, which I consider BY FAR (even though it wasn't my fastest), to be my strongest marathon.
Keep it reigned in for the first 10k. Warm up, settle in, find race pace by the end of it. At this point, I'm usually a tad slower (a few sec) than race pace. 10k to 13.1, hold race pace. 13.1-18, dip slightly below race pace if your legs are feeling OK. By slightly, I mean maybe 5-10 sec. This is the part of my race where I might see some 8:05ish miles. 18-23, hold on to MP for dear life. I can't cut loose in the last 10k; for me, there's still too much distance to cover. If I have ANYTHING left in my legs, I let it out for the final 3.2 miles. At just over 3 miles out, I feel like I can give it my final push without worrying about crashing & ruining my race.

Where are you in your training? How are things going so far? First of my really long runs done, 2 20milers left and I'm home free! My 15 was significantly harder than my 17, and I was sick for both so that doesn't help. But things are going well. I was feeling good at the end of my 17.

Good question, I'd love to hear these answers too, and I'd love to hear any advice on things I can do my last month and a half of training that could help. I'm thinking about doing some speed work and hill work on my lower mileage weeks.

Where are you in your training? How are things going so far? I'm going into week 5, still in the "Endurance" building stage of Pfitz 18/55. This week is a HMP tempo run and a MP long run. I'm a little nervous, but hoping it helps me with my confidence. My half is only a month away, so I really need to start believing I can hit my goal.

I like Pfitz's strategy and would recommend reading that portion of his book if you have it. But, I go by feel. I glance at my Garmin to make sure race day adrenaline isn't getting the best of me, and go with it. It got me a slower second half of Freedom's Run, but I had some cramping and the constant hills wore on me. MCM I was almost even. I don't feel like I should have run either differently.

I force myself to go slower that what I want to do in the first mile or so. Adrenaline kicks in, I want to go faster than my natural long distance pace. Once I get a couple miles in, I feel the nerves and jitters are gone, and I can comfortably listen to my body. I had a few times in the middle of the race, where I wanted to kick my pace up a notch for a bit, so I did. Then I found the excitement of the last mile gave me renewed energy and somehow I ran a really fast mile 26. (really fast for doing 25 miles prior of course).

Which race are you running and when? Houston 1/19. OMG 6 days.
Where are you in your training? How are things going so far? Taper, beautiful taper. I've experienced no taper madness, no phantom injuries, nothing. I'm just burned out on training and am gleeful to only have a couple easy 3 milers this week before the race on Sunday.

Well this will be my first marathon, so I probably shouldn't be dispensing advice on this And considering I'm still not sure what my overall goal is (I've thrown sub-4:00 out the window for this year and I'm OK with it), I guess I should figure that out sometime in the next few days.
Obviously tapering at the moment. I've lost something like 16 miles from my taper thanks to this stupid cold, but I had a good strong fast 8 miles last night and I'm pretty much recovered.
I don't really have a good answer to this of course, which is why I'm asking. I had good success in my half starting 10-20 sec slower than goal pace and slowly speeding up from there, but I'm concerned that that kind of slow steady increase will be a lot harder to maintain for a full.

Where are you in your training? How are things going so far? I'm calling it level 3. During the week I run 3 - 8 - 3 miles. This is my last week at level 3, then I move up to 4 - 8 - 4. (On the weekend I do 13 miles + or - a mile depending on how I feel.) This gets me to peak week training of 5 - 8 - 5 plus long run, or, level 5 as I like to call it. Things are going alright. Minor knee niggle on the right hand side from a ski crash in the alps a few weeks ago. Getting better though and I haven't missed any runs yet.

Strategy: Don't go out too hard, don't compare myself to anyone else, get into a comfortable rhythm and settle in, it's a long race. And don't forget to look around - the champs elysee and eiffel tour are on my route. Plenty to distract me
I am starting week 10 of my 16 week plan. Things have been really good so far. I have hit every run so far. I ran my 18 miler last week and felt great. Got my first 20 on Fri.
I am not good at strategy. I always start out fast. My goal is to start only 3 seconds faster than gmp for the first 5k.
