Has anyone taken a week off during 1/2 training and still been able to pick up where they left off?
I want to do a 1/2 either 4/26 or 5/4. H and I are going to Cabo March 23-28th, so it would be roughly week 6 or 7 of training. I usually follow Hal Higdon's 12 week plans (int or adv). Once we are back I would still have 4-5 weeks depending on which race I do.
I know myself better than to say I will run on this trip, nor do I really want to save for maybe a 3 miler on the treadmill or something.
I am wondering how much I will mess up training or if I should just wait and do a 1/2 where I can train straight through with no breaks.
The reason I am leaning towards still doing it is because of where I am at right now, and knowing I will have a long time to keep building a solid base before I officially start training. i.e. I had a great 6 miler yesterday.
I was sick and had to take almost 2 weeks off my training plan. I just jumped back in where I had left off. Luckily I started training a little early to account for the holiday breaks and stuff like that. Getting back into it is challenging but not impossible. I think it is do-able
I did to nurse some it band pain about a month before my race. I also skipped a week before my first half because i wnr out of the country. Both times I did fine.
I always modify my training plans to include a step back week (or two). I feel like crap if I don't work out at all, but I cut the mileage back quite a bit. We aren't traning for the Olympics, so you have to figure out a way to work training around your life.
I've done it before. I built an extra week into my training plan (I knew I was going on vacation and wouldn't be able to get in a solid week of training) and I just picked up where I left off. It worked out fine.
I wouldn't not do a half because of a vacay that far out from the race. 1-2 3 milers while you're gone would be a good idea but I think you'll be fine.
Bias disclaimer: Last year I went to Ireland for 10 days less than a month before my half ironman. I only ran every other day, never more than 5 miles, and didn't swim/bike while I was gone.
Enjoy your vacation! I took a long trip (almost a month) during training for my first half. I did what I could while I was gone, but took the last week (at least) off completely. I just started back when I was home, and did better than expected in my half.
