Hi all, I mostly lurk on this board and could use some advice/support/encouragement.
I am running my first half marathon, Tinkerbell, next weekend. The last half of my training got completely derailed by moving and then an upper respiratory infection which triggered asthma. My doctor, also a runner, checked me out and prescribed both an inhaler and prednisone. I had a chest x-ray that came back clear, no bronchitis or pneumonia. She said I am fine to run the half as long as I don't over exert myself.
I ran a 15K (9.5 miles according to my Garmin) yesterday which will have been my longest run. My lungs felt fine during the race. I used an inhaler about 20 minutes before the start and didn't need to use it on course. I ran two nine-mile long runs before I got sick and didn't run more than 3 miles at a time for the 2 weeks before the 15K. I am getting hung up on the fact that I did not do a 10-mile run as part of my training cycle. I haven't yet done a double digit mileage run.
I'm going to be okay for the half, right? My goal is to finish, not get swept, have fun and take pictures in the parks. I don't run fast and take plenty of walk breaks. The pacing requirement for the 15K was faster than I need to run for Tink. I'm going to be a back of the packer and I am fine with that. I'm nervous enough as it is about the race, I don't need to stress out about not really completing the training plan too.
9.5 miles is only .5 miles away from a 10 mile run! I know a lot of people that have up to 10 miles and did just fine during their half marathon. With jogging and walk breaks, I think it is definitely doable. p.s. I am super jealous you are doing the Tinkerbell Half.
You'll be fine. A number of half training plans only call for a 10 miler as the longest long run, and 9.5 might as well be 10. I know double digits is a mental hurdle (it still is for me on long runs, and I've done 2 half marathons) but physically you will be ready enough to do what you've described.

You are going to rock it, don't worry. Just don't go out too hard if you are not used to running double digits. Relax, let people go past you, run your own comfortable race.

I agree, you are going to be fine! Remember it is only your race, find joy in it, don't worry about your time, walk if you need to and remember you trained for this. I didn't run past ten miles in my first half marathon, I had fun and I had a time I was happy with.
