I'm training for my first half (seems to be the post trend today ). I'm currently doing a lot of running indoors because, ya know, winter but I will start running outdoors as soon as the weather gets nicer on the weekends. I'm night blind and leave for work as the sun is coming up and get home after its dark this time of the year. There are no street lights, so weekday outdoor running is out for now.
I would like to get a GPS to track my outdoor runs, an app could work as well if there is one that is reliable. I'm new-ish to running so any other gear suggestions, things you love, etc. would be much appreciated.
I find the phone apps don't work completely accurately.
I'm a big fan of the Garmin watches. They have a big selection with different ranges of features. For years, I used the Forerunner 305 and I was great, but I think it may be discontinued now.
I was using the app called strava when I started, and to be honest, I still use it. I also use a Garmin 210 watch which I love because I can see instantly how far I have run and what pace I am doing, which I find very motivating. Plus, you can upload from Garmin to strava - so it's easy to collate all my runs and enter the online challenges on strava.
I got the 310XT for Christmas and I really like it. It's multisport, so if you're not going to do a triathlon, you can get by with something cheaper.
I used to use MapMyRun like emuni04. It overestimates distance/underestimates pace just a little (maybe 0.1 mi over a 10km race, so 1-2%), but on the other hand it's free!

I have a Garmin 305...I used to think it was the bomb. We now fight daily.
DH is looking for his own GPS and may end up with either Nike+ or TomTom. At the moment he uses MapMyRun on his phone and it does a good enough job. Probably not super accurate but not so far off he is missing full miles!
