Today we had to bring our Willow to the vet to get her ear checked since we were sure she had an ear infection.
She did but when the vet noticed that she had gained 5 lbs since her last visit (in May) and her coat was feeling a bit brittle, she ran a thyroid panel even though she is apparently young for the condition (she is not yet 3).
Turns out Willow does have hypothyroidism. We are a bit freaked out since we are still doing research to learn more.
She took doggie synthroid every day and was fine. Luckily for me, she had no issue with pills. I just gave them to her like a treat and she gulped them down. It really was no big deal. Once she was on meds she went back to normal fairly quickly.
We got her prescription last night and right now she is taking 1 pill every 12 hours. We need to get her levels checked in 3 months to see if the dose is correct.
She is pretty good with pills so we will see how it goes taking 2 a day, even if they are teeny tiny.
Dexter takes thyroid medicine every morning and night. He wasn't having any symptoms; it showed up in his routine bloodwork. He's been on the medicine for about a year and a half now. He is definitely not a willing pill taker, but I wrap it in a tiny bit of turkey lunchmeat and he chomps it right down.
Just wanted to give a quick update since Miss Willow has been on her meds for almost a month.
She had her first full-blown, tearing aound the basement, growling and snorting like a foolio, throwing her toys in the air, howling like a wolf, squeaking her ball like it was going out of style and basically being a total spaz zoomies in a quite some time. Up to this point we would have one or two of those happen in the evening but not all.
I laughed so hard I cried. It is so nice to see her getting her energy back. Of course 10 minutes after the zoomies were over she was passed out on the futon, snoring.
