Speaking of Tom Hiddleston (as Loki in particular)

Does anyone know what the deal is with his hair being that unflattering black for the Thor/Avengers movies?  Admittedly I haven't read the Thor comics in particular, but every other description of Loki from mythology to Gaimanstuffs has Loki as a ginger dude.  So why did they cast a ginger dude, and then dye his hair dark?

I know he is a shape-shifter and can change his appearance, but I suspect this was done more for artistic purposes to distinguish from Thor as much as possible. Additionally, TH has said in interviews that he wanted Loki to look severe, hence dark hair and very white skin.

In the comics he usually has black hair. The one I just finished had him with black hair.
