I'll check this out too, but I have such a great group of Mom friends who I met through local Meetup.com Moms groups.
There was one for our local town which is super active and one for Moms over 35.
I would be friends with all these people even without the kiddos which is awesome. I highly recommend it.
I have a feeling that my large local moms meetup is a little clique-y from their Facebook page, and I do better with one on one meetings than large groups to start out with.
I didn't start with the big group stuff either.
I met a few Moms at a Mom's night out for over 35s and was 'meh' about it and haven't been to one since. BUT a couple of the Moms contacted me after the Meetup and I met with them separately and slowly became good friends. One of them is now a really close friend and the other comes over once a week during nap time so we can hang out and chat while the kids nap. It's nice.
The others I met because I couldn't find any play date groups for 6 - 12 month old babies. Our local Moms group is very organized and facilitates play date Meetups. I offered to host one... and the rest is history. It evolved over a few months and now we do a weekly playgroup with a regular group of 5 Moms. We also do regular Mom's night in (take turns hosting dinner) and out, we do classes with the kids and hang out having tea afterwards... oh and 3 of us are doing a photography class on Sundays. We also do occasional weekend play dates with the guys. We've been doing the play dates for a year now so the kids all know each other really well and get on great.
Yes I had to put myself out there a little, but the payoff has been huge. We were new to the area and I was so worried about feeling isolated when we moved here. Instead we have a great, ever expanding group of friends. Meetup was great because of meeting Mom's with similar age kids which makes life easier too.
Ok that got long, sorry - but I'm enthusiastic about it! ; )

FYI to those that have few people signed up in their area, get on FB and promote it. I put it on all the local garage sale/baby stuff/business sites that I have on my FB page. I noticed at least 10 new people signed up immediately after I posted it on the FB pages.
Do you have a UU church in your area? That is a very liberal, very non-religious group (not all self-identify as atheists I'm sure) and at least the one in my area tend to have a lot of families that attend. My BFF made a mom friend there.
