Everyone says you should have an A & B goal. How do you pick these goals? Care to share your goals with the class?
I wanted a redemption race after Chicago. Chicago wasn't a bad race, I got a nice little 7 min PR, but my body was not 100%. I wanted to feel good during a marathon & know that I had the best race possible.
My friend who got a stress fracture during Chicago training wanted to run Celebration. It's close enough to where I live, and it was just far enough out to get some decent training in. It's also the polar opposite of Chicago. I'm unsure as to whether or not this will be a good thing. Inaugural race, double loop, just over 650 people for the full. We'll see how it goes!

Typical taper grumbles. It doesn't matter how many times I've done this, the taper still gets me with its' mind games.

This is the big unknown for me this time around. Usually McMillan is spot on in his predictions, but I don't have a recent half time to go off of. This makes me a little uneasy.
My A goal was always to BQ, so even without a race time to support it, I'm going to go for broke & stick with that. I do have my half time from Savannah back in November. Using that time, I'm 30 sec off from a BQ w/McMillan's predictions. I don't think it's unreasonable to think I've gotten faster over the course of training. My A goal will be to be the squeakiest of squeakers, and come across that finish line at 3:34:59. lol
Thank you!! Miles 1-16 I was literally thinking "this is so fun! I could go forever!!" Then mile 18 happened. I started slowing down. Mile 20 was another big slow down. Miles 22-26.2 were a run/walk death march, lol.
I'm glad to have it behind me and use it as a lesson in the future to run a better marathon. Definitely a learning experience!

My A goal for marathons is typically what McMillian predicts. Then B and C are 5 min intervals slower than that. This is the first marathon, or any race for that matter, where I'll consider just finishing to be a triumph for me.
For other distances, I always want a PR Lesser goals would be to beat my time from the previous year (if I've done the race before), or place in a certain percentage of finishers.
Thanks! I'm actually really sad to be done now, but at least I have a half in 3 weeks so I can ease out of training mode a bit. I'm so damn excited to see what you do this weekend clseale!

Why did you pick this race? I love the course, the town, the spectators, the racers, the atmosphere. There is nothing quite like it.
Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents? Bragplaint alert…I ran my 16 with 10@ marathon pace Saturday. I hit my times fairly easily, but my paces were so inconsistent (7:20 to 7:50, with a 7:36 average). I couldn't get a good feel for marathon pace, which was the point of the damn run. Grr, wind.

Before baby #3, I was all about McMillan for my goals, but my endurance hasn't been up to par thanks to lack of sleep and breast feeding (can I use that as an excuse? because I do, anyway). Both of these things are less of an issue now though, so I think I can bust through this 2 year long plateau I've been having. My A goal is to PR. I'd need a 7:40 pace. I had perfect weather conditions for that PR, so I'd honestly be thrilled to get within 5 minutes of it. B is to be under 3:30, which I see no excuse for not hitting, unless it is awful weather, or my gut doesn't behave, or I get stuck in a 10 minute line to pee. Ok, I have lots of reasons why I can't hit that too
What are you training for? When? OKC Memorial Marathon, April 27
Why did you pick this race? It's 5 mins away from my apt, and I did it last year. Everyone does the Memorial.
Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents? Last week was a suckfest of fail. A planned 6 mile pace run turned into a 3 mile crying on the treadmill run because my legs from the hips down hurt inexplicably. Yesterday's 11 mile run was better, but not really a fun time. So that's discouraging, but I hope it was just a bad week. I haven't actually signed up for the race yet, and there's a little voice in the back of my head telling me that I won't be in this marathon, but I'm trying to make it shut up.

A is generally my "I know I can do this" goal, and B is my "OMG the stars aligned" goal. So if I meet my B goal, it's a big deal Right now, I'm picking my goals just to PR. I'm coming off of a 53 min marathon PR, but I don't expect to repeat that ever again lol. My PR is now 4:43:02. My A goal is 4:35, and my B goal is 4:29. But so far I'm having a rough training cycle, so I don't know what's going to happen.
I've done the 10k for this race the last 2 years. But I wanted a marathon in the early summer this year, so I decided to do the marathon instead of the 10k. Also this course boasts to be the fastest course in the state and I'm hoping for a PR Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents?

Well for now with marathons, my A goal is always just to finish! My B goal this time around is to shave a few minutes off my time. I want to try and get under 4:40 this time. That's only shaving 3 minutes of my original marathon time, but I'm setting my goals lower for now.
What are you training for? When? Whidbey island marathon, April 13.
Why did you pick this race? It was $40 and I needed something big to train for after coming off a huge high from ironman.
Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents? I'm super slow in comparison to you ladies, but every single long run, and gmp run has been below what my goal pace has been. I guess I should readjust!

I know I can go faster. I'm hoping for a 4:30 or faster but would be happy with anything under 5:30!! And with my 6:30 marathon during IM, after biking and swimming all day, I'm hoping for a big, big drop with just running!
What are you training for? When? 5.10.14 - Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon
Why did you pick this race? It's in my home county & essentially my "hometown" marathon. It's a small race and pretty flat so should be good for a PR.
Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents? No highlights... I had a pretty lax week, with some bad weather & my little sister's bachelorette on Saturday. I'm not sure if I'll consider this week or next week the "official start" of training. But, after her wedding on Feb 1 I need to start getting serious.

My A goal is sub - 4 hours and B goal is a PR (beating 4:05:05). I really had a great day with awesome weather for the PR, so depending how training goes these could be tough to beat. My C goal is to run a strong race that I'm proud of.

Why did you pick this race? It's my hometown race, and I want redemption from a bad race on this course last year.

I will likely be an AW and start a thread for advice on this later this week when I have more time to think it through. McMillan's prediction based on yesterday's half seems unrealistic...but maybe I'm just not aiming high enough. My B goal will be to beat last year's time, which should be easily accomplished unless the bottom falls out again.

What are you training for? When? Paris Marathon, April 6th
Why did you pick this race? its Paris, they give you wine and cheese towards the end of the race. What's not to love? also, it's pretty cheap to enter (€100). I think you need to raise thousands of pounds for London if you don't get a place in the ballot.
Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents? Ran my longest ever run, 16.1 miles on Saturday and felt good. Even had a phone conversation around mile 13-14.

(HM times are consistently 1:53-55 in training on a hilly course, so who knows what race day and a flat course could bring?) Why did you pick this race? Its been on my list. After being a couple blocks from the finish line last year when the bombs went off, I knew this would be the year.
Any highlights from last week? Issues or vents? I actually made it out for 3 runs. I'm going to see a sports med doc next week so that I can get some help with my knee issues.

B goal- to cross the finish line running I picked them because I am trying to be realistic. This is not a great time for me to train for a marathon. I ran Chicago in October, have an H who is going to be traveling a ton, 21 month old twins, and a body that hates me right now.
