I'm tinkering around with flight prices home this summer. Cathay Pacific is running a sale to a few US destinations only (LA, Chicago, NY, San Fran) but not my desired airport, Minneapolis.
Want to know what the difference is between BNE-LAX versus BNE-MSP? Over $10,000!
Brisbane to LA = $1,764
Brisbane to Minneapolis = $12,049
And there you have it, folks, the $10,000 flight half way across the U.S.

Holy Crap!
Can you fly into the US and then take Southwest to Minneapolis?
Last time DH & I flew home, there was no cost difference in the MEL-SFO flights and the MEL-MSY (NO) flights. That's the ONLY reason we flew United.
And just out of curiosity, why not fly Brisbane to SFO, then on to Minneapolis? Is there that big a difference versus LAX? I avoid LAX at all costs. $10,000 is not worth it, but anything under $500 per person is for me.

Oh, totally, that's what we'd do if we went with Cathay Pacific.
But SO thinks going to Hong Kong first is unthinkable and adds too much time to the journey. 1) No it doesn't and 2) It's at least $400 cheaper per person, if not more.
It looks like LAX is cheaper to fly into than SFO. LAX is way cheaper than ORD, too.
