You can if you want to, but it's not important. We didn't start teeth brushing until maybe 10 mos, and we had most our teeth by then. She's had two dentist visits so far, and have healthy teeth.

When do you do first dentist visit?
15 mos.
I think the rec is 12 mos for ff babies, 18 for bf.

My doctor said 3 years old unless there were concerns so my daughter hasn't even gone yet!

Where did you take her? I took M to my dentist and she only let them scrape her teeth. She wouldn't put up with the polisher.

And, @jennuinne, you can start massaging his gums and teeth with a wet washcloth just to get them used to being cleaned, and having your fingers in his mouth. They also have those little finger cover thingies with the soft rubber bristles on them. Those are good, too.
We gave M these to gnaw on at about 7-8mo and she seemed to enjoy them.

We started brushing when she had teeth. Dentist at 18 months, flossing same time. The dentist right now is just so they get used to it and aren't scared. Bkbs first visit she didn't let them do anything.
Our dentist gives us toothbrushes for G at our appointments. We have one that is shaped like an oval with bristles on one end for her to bite on and one that looks more like a smaller version of an adult brush. We try to brush her teeth every evening but probably manage to get it done ~5 days a week. Her first appointment is right after mine next month (so 22 months old). They call it a "happy visit" since they'll just try to get a look inside her mouth to check for problems and not really do any cleaning.
ETA - she was really slow getting teeth in and only had 2 teeth at a year old. So we didn't really start brushing until a bunch more came in, maybe by around 18 months? She still doesn't have her 2 year molars or any of her incisors.
I think with M it was around a year that I started trying to get her used to the toothbrush. She had all her teeth accept her 2yr molars by then though so I probably should have started sooner?
She just turned 3 and hasn't been to a dentist yet as most around here say wait until they are 3.

Really? o.O
She didn't get her 2 top molars until nearly 18 months and 2 bottom molars until 20 months.
Wait, maybe I'm naming teeth wrong? She doesn't have canines -- are incisors something different? I think canines normally come in around when molars come in. She has four top and bottom teeth in the middle, top and bottom molars, but is still missing the 4 teeth in between (plus missing the 2 year molars, but I don't expect them for a while).

Oh! Ok. Incisors are the front 8 teeth. Haha I had this image of her having only canines and walking around. XD But I could've sworn she had more than that at the meet up last June. Hehe.
Lol! For some reason I can't for the life of me remember teeth names. Maybe that's why I preferred physics/chemistry and could never stand bio? I think in June she maybe had 4 teeth? Two top and two bottom.
