I think one of the reasons winter is more dramatic now is because of social media. I know someone else on the board made this point too, but I can't remember who it was. Ten years ago, if there was a huge storm coming in, you'd hear about it on the news or whatever, but now with everyone sharing on FB, Twitter, etc., I feel like it's making the hysteria level rise.
I will say this is the worst winter I've seen in years here in IL. Normally we might get one or two snows that result in snow days, maybe one cold spell that lasts a couple days. But we've had 4 snow days in two weeks with probably more to come. Two, going on three, spells of having wind chills -30 or lower. That is unusual for us. And just the frequency with which we've had even small snows is way higher than usual. We have gotten snow 2-3 times every single week since Dec., which is unusual.

I know a couple of times we got a significant amount of snow when I was younger (1996 stands out) but I don't remember it being so COLD.
When I was younger, they would delay or cancel, plow, and we were back to school the next day.
But the salt and brine they put on the road are essentially useless in temps below 16 degrees, so even though the roads get plowed, they are still very dangerous, so they cancel even when the snow had stopped.
