Significant Northeast Snow Threat to Occur Monday January 22, 2014; 3:35 PM
The next storm that has a chance of bringing accumulating snow to a large part of the Northeast will arrive on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.
The train of Alberta Clipper storms that began a couple of weeks ago will continue into next week. The storms originate from the western provinces of Canada, where they get their name.
The pattern will have yielded close to a dozen systems by this weekend. The clipper storms have been of various strength and have taken a variety of paths.
Prior to the potential for accumulating snow over a broad area on Monday, a few locations from the central Appalachians to New England may receive a dose of snow on Saturday. The snowiest spots would be from West Virginia to western Pennsylvania, but one or two brief periods of snow can reach the I-95 corridor in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New England.
After the large and strong clipper storm blasts the Great Lakes with wind, snow and whiteouts Friday night into Saturday night, the next clipper storm will take a path farther south.
It is possible the track of the storm and its snow may shift to the north or to the south as more information becomes available.
The clipper scheduled to take a track across the Ohio Valley Sunday night will reach the mid-Atlantic coast on Monday. The snowfall output from the storm could be similar to the storm from this past Tuesday.
The exact track and strength of the Monday storm will determine how much snow falls and where the cut off of band of snow exists to the north and south.
I saw someone post this on my FB too. Foots Forecast is saying it should go just north, but honestly, if these schools are off again, they will be in school another week. The calls to be excused will commence and I will be throwing ish.

Here in New England I'm kind of over people freaking out about snow (folks in other parts of the country where snowstorms are less common get a pass). For here, this is normal winter weather, and all the "Snowpocalypse!!" hoopla every time we get 6" of snow drives me batty.

I've been trying really hard to be honest with myself about whether the winters were this dramatic when I was younger, and I honestly don't think they were. Now I've lived in Colorado and upstate NY, so I'm not exactly new to shitty winter weather, but I do think we have been brutally slammed in the past several years, barring that one crazy winter a few years back where the temp didn't drop below 45.
That said, I can't stand the panic. In my area, people may be trapped in their house for one day, two if the entire township government gets abducted by aliens and can't direct the snow plows and salt trucks.
I just saw an article posted on Yahoo today that my undergrad alma matter was second snowiest in country with 10 feet a year. A YEAR! I have gone soft, for sure.

Where I lived in Japan it was 20ft and no snow plows. It wasn't terribly cold at least. Sadly the skiing wasnt very good

Of course, my SIL isn't due for another couple of weeks, but since the weather is going to dump on us, the baby is for sure coming early. I do not want to drive across the state in crap weather! LOL sounds totally selfish, I know, but hey, it's her fourth kid
I can do either the cold or the snow, but not both. Shoot, I might actually take frigid over snow. No more. I'm not even in the NE and I'm still saying no (it hits us first in the midwest anyway).

My husband's school was at 10 in that same survey. I was amazed my school wasn't named, because the college THREE MILES away from us came in at #8.

I will say that the Mid Atlantic, unlike CO and upstate NY, sort of has their freak out meters running full tilt when it comes to snow. AFAIK, school has been canceled this year basically any day it has snowed. Last winter, at my mom's house in upstate NY, it snowed basically every day for 6 weeks, starting in early December, so eventually you have to just get on with life.
That's not to say the snow combined with cold yesterday was super pleasant. It's just to say that for an area that gets maybe 5-8 good snowfalls a year, all of them are apparently a MAJOR deal. (Combined with the fact that a sizable population lives in the corridor between NYC and DC, unlike, say, upstate NY or Vermont.)

Yes! My entire damn town shut down early yesterday and everyone planned to start late today. (I'm in CT) Guess how much snow we got at my house? HALF AN INCH. For real?
I realize that this was weird and we were supposed to get much more, but really this is New England. A 6 inch snowfall is not that uncommon.

Yeah, I agree that I don't recall the snow being this dramatic even 10 years ago. Like I went to college in Maine and it was just like meh, that's winter.
But everyone is all crazy around here thinking every storm is going to be a blizzard, and then there is a city parking ban, and then the schools get cancelled, and it gets crazy.
Apparently the snow was a bust in Boston last night (like, it didn't really get hit hard at all) after they called a snow emergency and everything.
I'm so sick of snow. My coworkers started winter with the whole "whatever the date of the first snow is how many snowfalls we will get." We are so past that number. Now they freak out & whine with even the smallest flurry.
And OMG the nutso people with the grocery shopping before every storm.
It's not the snow that has been crazy here (it's Cleveland; we get a lot) but it has been so fucking cold. The water intakes from the lake have actually frozen and some towns had water shortages. I don't remember that happening when I was a kid.
I won't complain about the snow because I feel like we really haven't had much, but I will complain about the cold. Perhaps it's because I have to maneuver three kids in and out if the car for the first time during the winter, but I just know it sucks donkey balls.
I used to be comfortable making fun of southerners when it snowed/threatened to snow. Now, seeing how they react where I grew up in CT, I feel like I lost my street cred.
My sophomore and junior years in high school we got SLAMMED with snow. Multiple storms of over a foot. I think they closed school once or twice? We got delayed like crazy, but we never shut down like they do now.
Snow I can handle. Shoveling it is good exercise. But the weather that is cold enough t keep me from letting the toddler outside to blow off steam - I'm ready to be done with that.
I will be honest, it has been really cold here this winter, colder than most, and as a result the snow we HAVE received has stayed on the ground as opposed to previous years where it has traditionally melted quickly, but HOLY CRAP, you guys have had WAY WORSE weather than us…it just seems weird to me…again, when I look at that map, it will be cold here, but it doesn't look like we are getting snow.
We haven't even had a day where the buses have been cancelled yet, let alone a full out snow day. And this is CANADA!!!!

You have the equipment. That helps. My sister in western NY jad one due to sub zero temps of -25. That is the threshold for them

All I know is I will be PISSED if daycare closes again on Monday but schools remain open, which is what happened yesterday. To clarify, I was more annoyed that daycare closed, not that schools were open, because one of the many reasons we chose this daycare is because they follow the schools' lead on closings, which works great for us because if both are closed, DH stays home with the baby.
I blame the media for assigning names to snowstorms as if we're talking about fucking hurricanes. And then there's the whole thing of everyone being afraid of a lawsuit if someone gets hurt going to work/school.

Oh, I agree, in terms of snow, it helps. But honestly, we haven't had huge snowfalls…there is snow on the ground today, but it is between 1 and 2 inches…probably closer to 1 than 2. We have only had two days where we have had like a foot of snow fall. We have had one day as cold as your sister's but we still didn't cancel school - we don't cancel school for temp, just for snow, lol.
I don't mind though. If we get about 5-8 inches they end up cancelling busses but not school, which means it is too dangerous for the busses but not dangerous enough for us educators to haul our asses to work. That only bothers me because those drives to work stress me out!!! It's been better since I got winter tires but even then, it's not fun.

Drive an hour to my neck of the woods if you want some crazy snow and road conditions!! This is why I'm skipping Canada for the next few weeks. Lol.

I'm hanging with the Biebs in Miami
There is a reason why I live so close to Lakeshore, lol…overall, we get off easier, except for that stupid lake effect snow.
