I thought it was fantastic. I mean it really glamorized things a bit *too* much IMO but thats hollywood for you. I thought Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent. The whole scene with him trying to get home from the country club was some serious acting skills, I wonder how many takes that took.
One of my favorite movies this year. I didn't even mind the length. I hope Leo finally wins the Oscar for this one. I also found it interesting that it was based on the real characters book and a lot of the info was verified to have been true - even the helicopter scene! They are lucky to be alive.

Scorsese said that whole scene was improvised on the day of filming.
The IMDb trivia has some pretty interesting tidbits. Like, the chest beating Matthew McConaughey was doing is how he actually warms up before he acts. Leo saw him doing it and told him he should do it in the movie lol.
I liked the main story, but the misogynistic aspects totally ruined it for me completely. I hated how women were just naked trophies to screw. I really only saw the second wife as a "prize" he won and when she left it was a symbol of him losing his status and control. She has no real backstory, no outside interests - we know nothing about her except how hot she is, basically. When Jonah Hill was talking about (a couple times) hot wives, like you are nothing if you have an ugly wife or a fat wife (when he is fat, and not particularly "hot" and kind of an asshole in the movie) I was really grossed out. The only real woman they gave any real story and personal interest to was Leo's first wife, who he just tossed aside. And the only female at the firm they focused on near the end (yeah, there were women at the firm, doing all kinds of jobs I suppose but not like they had a story line) was the one women needing to be saved, unless Leo had given her a chance she would just be a single mom out on the street.
IDK, my feminist flag was flying high when watching that movie but those aspects really bothered me, obviously. I mean, I know Scorsese is always over the top and this matches up with that, but it still bothered me. And I seem a little hypocritical with Jessica Rabbit as my avatar but she at least has a backstory lol.

I haven't laughed so hard at that scene, I thought it was hilarious when he was rolling down the steps.

We saw this last night, and I was really impressed with everyone's acting. It just blows my mind how this is all mostly true, though. My God what lives to lead.
I agree with SJ. I thought it was pretty shocking the way women were portrayed (the flight to Vegas scene, OMG!) but that is how it is. It's not like the movie portrayed women in a sexist way just to show some boob in order to sell movie tickets. Yikes that's the world they lived in!
I read the book a few years ago and the movie was really true to the book. Fantastic acting (Jonah hill esp was spectacular, I think I'm a bit leo'ed out after gatsby) but fully agree with the misogyny - reality was horrendous and the movie really highlighted that. The super rapey scene when his blonde wife wants a divorce especially.
I just saw it! It was the last best picture nominee I needed to see.
I agree about the misogyny, especially when you think that this took place only 20ish years ago. This is not the 1920s. It's not even the 1950s. Holy shit. I could not even imagine working in that office as a woman. If the sexism didn't drive you out (and I'm amazed they weren't sued for that), I surely would have left when I heard the Feds were knocking, rather than pissing on a subpoena.
But overall, it was fun. Crazy. About an hour too long. Lots of cool toys and scenery. Pretty good job by Leo, but he's done somewhat similar characters before. Either assholes or rich, clueless people - he just did both in this movie.
I feel kind of icky about the fact that I'm PRETTY sure the real Jordan Belfort is the only person making money on this movie, out of all of them, since the names of the characters were changed and Belfort optioned the book to make the film. I also know the guy with the toupee is suing over the portrayal of his character.
