We had a babysitter come last night while we went to Jay Z (which was AMAZING, btw. So much fun!) When we got home I asked her how much we owe her and she just said, whatever you think is fair. :? Ack! She's 25, and used to work at our daycare, so I just assumed she had rates she uses. She came over at 5:30, we left just after 6 after showing her around, A went to bed at 7, and then we came home at 12:30. We paid her $100.
7 hours? Yes, I think that's fair. Sitters in my area tend to run about $10/hr so I know I would have paid at least $80 (I always add a little on). And they are teenagers. So - you paid more like $15 an hour.
BTW, I don't think when you left (unless she showed up early) or when your kid goes to bed factors in. She was there from 5:30 - 12:30.

No. no, agreed. when we left is irrelevant. I'd just heard of some babysitters charging more for awake hours, and less for asleep hours. This is our first paid babysitter.

I've heard of that too. Unless it's for a true overnight, I don't understand it, though. Granted, all they have to do is sit around and watch tv/read or whatever. But I feel that I"m paying them for peace of mind more than anything else.
