I don't think you need more than 5. We have 6-7 & it's way too many. And we DO have to send 1 set per week to daycare. We only registered for 4 but were gifted a few extra sets that we weren't able to return/exchange.
We have four regular crib sheets, and then I bought two flannel ones a few months back, but obviously they serve different purposes (flannel for cooler weather, switch back to woven when it warms up).
We had 8 and never used half of them. Dd is a puker so 2 would have not cut it at all, but 4 would have been fine (6 were random shower gifts at work, I didn't know where they were from so couldn't return, 1 was free from amazon, and 1 I purchased at pbk).
We have 4 which is way more than we've ever needed. We used 3 once a couple weeks ago when she had a GI bug. We have one spare mattress pad (used to have 2 but we gave one to my mom to use at her house). That has also been plenty.
We also have 2 sheets for daycare - we keep both there so she has a back up if needed.
We have 3 sets of flannel and 3 sets of cotton, so essentially 3 for each season. If you're in a relatively consistent climate, 5 should be more than enough.
By set, I mean fitted sheet + waterproof mattress pad cover.
Nothing fancy.
You need more than one mattress pad?
I have 4 crib sheets and two mattress pads between 2 kids.
I have 2. I change it whenever I have to change the sheets due to them getting dirty from some type of body fluid. I don't change it for just a regular sheet laundering.
We have 3 sheets and 2 mattress protectors, and have never needed more. I like having 3 of most things. One is in use, one is clean waiting in the dresser, and the third is in the laundry cycle somewhere (hamper, washer/dryer, waiting to be put away). That way, if DS has a diaper leak/spits up/pukes/whatever, I pull out the clean one and put it on. Then I don't have to do laundry ASAP.
