Omg! Im surprised by that - I assumed by brad Pitts vocal support of gay marriage his parents would support it too. Oops.
Same here. I assumed that his parents would be somewhat forward thinking. I guess that's because he's someone who I feel is pretty open with his support and acceptance of all different people. I guess he didn't really get that from his mom. It's too bad she's not learning more from him.
Sure, it's embarrassing, but the vast majority of my blood relatives are either idiotic, manipulative, or poor decision makers in general, at least some of the time. I'm sure they might say similar things about me. It's common to be embarrassed by your family, right? (Please say yes. I'm not happy with most of my family right now.)

Oh definitely! I won't judge him for this, it doesn't change who he is. And I think most people have some family that they probably don't have anymore in common with than a handful of genes.

I wont judge him either, but I am curious if he'll acknowledge this letter and try and distance himself from it. I can tell you that I'd probably be too happy to publicly throw down on some of my more bigoted family members if they wrote a letter like this and it was connected back to me if I was a public figure.

But it's his mom. I don't think I could call out my mom, and I wouldn't expect other people to. If he acknowledges it at all (I don't think he has to, he's been clear enough on his position) then I would hope he'd leave it at, 'we don't share the same views, but I love her'.

He can come over to my place and I'll console him. Poor, poor Brad.
But he's been famous for a long time and very vocal about this issue for a long time and I would not be surprised at all if this letter is a fake. The parent of a celebrity knows better 9 times out of 10.

My BIL is from Springfield. When my sister and he were up there a couple weeks ago for a reunion, she sent me a picture of protesters, all men, holding signs saying things like women should be meek, quiet, and covered. Someone was blocking most of another sign, but it definitely had married and Jesus in it. So, in that town, it doesn't seem that Brad's mom is all that unusual.
BIL thinks he might move back there someday. Yeah, I don't see my sister going along with that.

If I may interrupt the stereotyping for a moment, I grew up there, and assure you that it has intelligent, open-minded people, along with backwards bigots, and everything in between. Just like every other town on the planet.
I am shocked by the letter, not only because I am surprised she would feel this way, but because the family tends NOT to seek that kind of attention, from what I have observed.
If it's true, it's very disappointing. I will never, ever understand why anyone opposes legalizing gay marriage. Can't wrap my head around it even a little.
/signed, former Springfieldian who supports gay marriage 100%, as do most people with whom I associate from my hometown.
And no, we were not taught creationism in school, in case you're wondering.
I stand corrected. Just chatted with my mom, who still lives there, says they aren't as private as I thought anymore. His brother will apparently be on the Today show next week. Strange. There are rumors of political aspirations.

Chill. I was just sharing an anecdote. I never said everyone there was like that, just implied that this woman likely has people who agree with her, like she would probably in most small towns in America. I just basically wanted to share the picture b/c it was insane (and all the family members commented with "yep, that's springfield"), but I couldn't find it.
Oh, and her lesbian SIL also has no desire to move back there because she doesn't feel welcome. Anecdotes FTW!

I would never assume that. My family holds all sorts of opinions - some I agree with and some I don't. And I might be completely in agreement with family member A on Topic Z as we argue against Family member B - only to change sdes on Topic Y....
