I started lifting free weights and I enjoy it. However, I am hesitating on deadlifting. I obviously can't do enough weight to get the bar high enough off the ground so I am not sure how to start.

How heavy is this bar you're using that you can't get it off the ground? Standard olympic bars are 20KG. If that's too heavy, see if they have a training bar at 15 pounds or 10KG and start with that.

Do you mean that you can't use big enough weight plates on the side of the bar to lift it off the ground so you're in the right position to then start your lift? My (Crossfit) gym has big bumper plates, so I can put as little as 10kg total on the bar, 5kg each side, and it's lifted just as high as if I'd added 50kg/side, but I am guessing that in your case the smaller weights are physically smaller, right?
You can stack the plates under the side of the bar to elevate it if you're just lifting the bar with nothing additional on it, or ask at your gym if they have blocks or something else you can use so that you're not hoarding all the weights.
