What is your marginal state tax bracket?

We went from 9.3% in CA (not including another mandatory 1.5% in state disability) to 5.75% in VA. It's a flat tax here over $17K, which I love.

For earnings between $20,000.00 and $200,000, you'll pay 6.85% plus $973.00

As a couple -

For earnings between $40,000.00 and $300,000, you'll pay 6.85% plus $1,938.50

So being married cost me about $1000 a year if I am reading this right.

5.0% here in IL. However, I'm hoping someday we return to a lower tax but I'm pretty sure it this increase will be extended for a while..

Our marginal rate is 10.8% in Oregon. Doesn't look like there is a penalty for being married.

On second thought, I can't read the table. We are at 9% marginal and no marriage penalty. If I was single, I'd have a 10.8% marginal rate, but I'm not.

Wouldn't you each have to pay $973 if you were single? That doesn't look like a penalty unless you each individually earn more than $150K.

Sales tax is 10.5 % on almost everything, less on groceries. No income tax in Washington state.

This is good for me but bad for humanity. I voted for the state income tax initiative in 2010 even though it was not a tax swap but merely covered gaps in education and health care funding.

According to the chart it is 5.99%, but I thought they recently updated the RI tax to a flat tax of 4.99% with no deductions? Or maybe the tax rates were higher before and the 5.99% is the new, lower tax.
