Wait a second, are we talking about city/municipal taxes imposed on property, payroll, or general purchases?
My accounting brain assumed payroll, but all these people talking about sales taxes and stuff is majorly throwing me off. Perhaps I should take a break on filing various business taxes today.
We don't own a house yet (looking to buy @ the end of the year) but here's what I found on our city website:
Residential Real Estate $10.78 Municipal $9.96 School $20.74 per $1000 tax valuation Commercial Real Estate $11.93 Municipal $11.01 School $22.94 per $1000 tax valuation Tangible $26.62 Municipal $24.57 School $51.19 per $1000 tax valuation Motor Vehicles $19.29 Municipal $17.81 School $37.10 per $1000 tax valuation
Water Rates $2.85/100 cubic feet Minimum Water Charge $31.66 up to 1,111 cubic feet Sewer Charge $7.78/100 cubic feet after the first 875 cubic feet
Several stupid things about the car tax:.
We used to have an exemption on the 1st $3000 of value but they lowered it to $500 because the state legislature is soooo not MM. Under state law, a vehicle’s condition or mileage cannot be taken into account when deciding how much it is worth for tax purposes. They use data from the National Automobile Dealers Association based on a perfect car. Who drives a perfect vehicle? Not around here with our sh!tty roads (2nd worst in the US). So they value my 3 year old Hyundia @ the same price as I paid for it when I bought it new 3 years ago.

I'm talking about income tax.
Yep, I answered regarding income tax but added our sales tax rate as well. For fun
City income tax is 2.5%. We live within city limits and I work within city limits so I'm easy. DH works in the suburbs (1.8%) so we pay quarterly taxes to the city for the difference.
My state totally sucks! High taxes and we aren't somewhere awesome to live like California or NYC, lol.
NJ is worse. We have among the highest state & local taxes (property taxes), we have 7% sales tax (though not on food & clothes) and we have state estate & inheritance taxes (only NJ and MD do). The exemption is really low too, like $675k vs. the feds is now $5MM.
I'm not sure if we pay a town tax or not. Our property and school taxes are high here though compared with what people pay in other states. NY is not tax friendly.

Yeah but don't you guys get to go to NYC and/or the Jersey shore every weekend?
I live in probably the worst spot to visit either place every weekend. I am far enough south that going to the city is a once every other month trip if I am lucky. I am also at the very western edge along the river. I am far enough north, however, that the beach we go to is ~80 miles to the southeast. (The closest is ~45 miles east but that is the type of place you see on Jersey Shore)
