I'm trying to focus my strength training on things that will directly benefit my half training. So, if you are a runner, what strength training exercises do you find to be the most beneficial?
My leg routine is pretty basic. I do squats (with the bar, and also goblet squats with a dumb bell) leg extensions, hamstring curls, butt blasters (flute machine) and leg presses.
On my cross training days we do a lot of squats too. Also, I have found that strengthening my core has actually been more beneficial than leg work. I can get lazy with my leg work but core work has helped me more, and is also easier to fit in with training, since my legs can be dead some days and I like to save them for running.
If I can't make it, I do squats and lunges, triceps, pushups, rows. No particular order or lifts, but I always go heavy and do 3 sets of 10-12 of each lift.
Me three. I like a full body program rather than a haphazard focus on legs or whatever.
I have nrolfw on the way but was hoping that I would get an answer of people's training plans or exercises. Thanks for all the answers!
That is the awesome thing about NROLFW, it has everything outlined for you. It took me about a year to get through the book doing strength training 1-2 times a week. I ordered the New Rules Supercharged, but it looks like it is going to require me to actually think about what I am doing
I switch it up. I take strength and pilates or yoga classes at the gym and fitness blender workouts online. Running specific exercises are: step ups, squats (regular and one leg), lunges (I like walking lunges or backward/forward, basically constant motion). Core is key for long distances.
Thanks ladies! Classes on weekdays are pretty much out of the question, there is only a few spinning classes that are before work, everything that starts after my work hours I would have to speed and rush to get to. I can't leave my office any earlier than 6pm so it kinda sucks for classes.
I've been doing the Jillian Michaels Shred-It kettlebell workout 2-3 times per week. And then on Sundays, my SIL leads us through a crossfit type workout that usually makes me sore for about three days
