I need to go on a business trip to Houston from Dallas. It is about 250 miles each way. Would you rather pick up a rental car locally and drive about 5 hours each way or fly (park at airport 45 min away, 45 min flight on SW, pick up rental car and drive 30 min. to site and then do that for the return)? I hate driving long distances but can't decide which one is going to be more pita on my own.
Unless you plan on driving 100mph, it will take more than 5 hours to get there.
oops, haha I googled and it is like 250 miles.
LOL, that's better. I would probably actually be more likely to drive in that instance, since you'll have to drive 45 minutes to the airport and fly 45 minutes and get a rental car.
Houston to Dallas is about the same distance as Atlanta to Charlotte. I can't imagine flying to Charlotte, and I'm only 20 minutes from the airport. It will take you AT LEAST three hours to fly (get to the airport 1.5 hours early, pick up the rental car in Dallas, etc.) vs. about four hours to drive, so it's a wash.
Others would say fly, but if it were on my own dime I would 100% drive.

I would drive, esp if I needed a car while I was there. I don't know if it's equivalent, but door-to-door, it takes less time to drive Boston-NYC than it takes to fly, when you factor in airport security, collecting luggage, etc. I always drive there.
For me it would be less hassle than getting to the airport etc., and would probably take as much time as getting to the airport early, getting through security, boarding, taking off (maybe on time, maybe not), the flight, de-planing, picking up a rental car, etc.
My drive/fly line is in the 6-7 hour drive area. If I can't get a direct flight (a usual problem from my airport) I'm more willing to drive. But I also am conditioned to drive for 4.5 to 5 hours no sweat, since that's how far I've lived from my parents for the last 12 years.
I would fly, but I fly a lot, and I love flying and really dislike driving. I've flown several times from Milwaukee to Chicago, which is about a 2 hour drive.
It's just a 4 hour car trip, we do it several times a year. Honestly, the airports here kinda suck and with having to wait there, board, fly, and depart you are better off just flying. Not to mention cabs are pricey.

at $0.55 per mile (IRS reimbursement rate) that would be $275 - would that be enough to cover your gas and the wear and tear on your car? If so - for 250 miles one way I'd probably drive - and actually have driven that distance one way.

ETA: duration of stay is 2 nights
Dallas to Houston? I'd drive. It's not a very long drive.

I've made that drive. It's easy. 4 hours or so. It's like Atlanta to Nashville or Miami to Orlando. I've made those drives tons of times and wouldn't ever think of flying. Now if only America could figure out rail!
