DH and I are going to Costa Rica in one week! Soooo excited! I have an 18 mile run on my plan to do. I've read that where we are going the beach is the best place to run as far as safety etc. But it's so hot there right now, I'm not sure I can get in 18. So, if I can't, what should be my goal mileage for my long run? I know we can easily get our short runs in no problem.
Is there a treadmill? I'd personally try and get up early and run. If it gets too hot I'd move to the treadmill and get as many miles as you can. Life happens, do what you can.

I can just taste the humidity now. Granted, it is February, so won't be as bad as it was for me to be in Mexico in August with a long run ;-) Can you pick like a center point on the beach, and run 3 mi north, 3 mi back to center, 3 mi south, 3 mi back...that will give you a decent 12...and if you feel decent enough, run 1.5 north and back, and then again if you're still feeling it? It would be boring as hell most likely, but that way you are never too far from "home" if you cant bare the heat. HAVE FUN!
Oh boy it is hot in CR. Can you get in a few shorter runs before the 18 miler to try to acclimate to the heat/humidity? I think you should still try to get the 18 in, but go slow and expect to do some walking.
I switch my schedule around for vacations and make it a "recovery" week. IIRC, your race is in April? Plenty of time to get 18+ milers in. Maybe attempt a double digit (10-12), but don't stress over it. It's vacation!
I will be training in Florida for a half August-October and my main plan is to make sure I get up as early as possible right before the sun rises to get the long runs in. Make sure you have LOTS of water and whatever else you use to fuel with. I am super jealous of your trip and even more jealous of your incredible Costa Rica beach run! If its too hot maybe you could do walk/run intervals?

Like actually ON the beach? On sand? I would be really careful about doing a long run on sand, it is so much harder on your calves (even hard sand) that you could be asking for injury which would totally defeat the purpose of doing it. I don't think I'd be up for doing 18 on any surface that you're not used to running on at least some.
If you had treadmill access, could you split it between treadmill and outdoors?

As far as I know that is where people run lol! I'm probably not going to get in 18. My goal is to get in all my short runs this week and all my short runs in on vacation and maybe when I get there, there will be a better alternative to 18 on the beach! I'm not too worried!
