Did the Moreton Morrell Mad Dash today, 20km in what could have (and should have) been horrendous conditions given the weather we have in England right now. I vowed that if I woke up and didn't feel like it I'd just give it a miss. It's more of an event for club runners which means no medals, goodies and on roads with traffic.
But... I woke up, the sun was out so we drove 80 odd miles south and the weather was still good. Plus, my competitive side kicked in and I was up for it.
The briefing was crap, no one could hear a word she said except that headphones were banned and you would be disqualified if you had them in. The people around me laughed and said 'yeah right' and put theirs in. So did I. I like to run to music. Off we went.
The course was two laps of 10km and there was a 10km option. My husband said if the weather was crappy or I didn't feel like the full, just push through to 10 and call it good.
The 10km people started 2 mins earlier and about 150 metres ahead of us but I caught some of them up pretty quickly. I passed a couple of marshals and avoided their stare as I went past. They were all on their own so unlikely they would leave their post to rip my earphones out.
Saw my husband and my dog about 7km in as they were walking a lap of the course in reverse. Totally confused my dog as I ran past!
Far less people on the second lap for the 20km length. I was mostly running on my own and a couple of times I couldn't even see anyone ahead of me. So in order to not get pulled over for my earphones, I took them out and played my choons through the speakers of my phone which was strapped to my arm. I figured no one could hear my music and I wasn't breaking any rules.
Thundered over the line in 1:45:09. PR on 15k, 10mile and 20k distances. Sweet. Now lying on the sofa in my reindeer onesie.
ETA: came tenth! Not in age category, just tenth female across the line. Whoa.
