The two month old has a very minor cold for over a week - a little congestion, a few coughs each day. Mostly it's just annoying because it keeps us up all night.
Here's the catch: about once a day when she coughs she'll make this funny high pitched sound afterwards, three times in quick succession, while trying to catch her breath. She sounds like a bird. Whoot! Whoot! Whoot! No other signs of distress. It is very infrequent (once a day). Once daily whooting started 3-4 days ago.
WWMLD?
Make a pediatrics appointment later this week to check for pertussis?
Watch and wait to see if it becomes a regular cough or more whooting?
ER or urgent care today for pertussis test (with an ostensibly healthy child)?
Does your pedi have an on call dr. tonight? I would start there. If not, I would go to Urgent Care. Pertussis is not something to be played around with.

Are you sure it's related to the cold/cough? My DD does this when she eats too fast-- if I prop her up, it goes away. I wasn't planning to act on it, but maybe I should? She's been doing it all along-- I feel like it would have progressed by now. Not sure if it's the same noise, though.

If your doctor does not have an after hours on call person to answer questions, does your insurance company? Ours has a 24/7 nurse hotline available to keep people from going to Urgent Care when it isn't necessary.
Normally I wouldn't say this, but given how quickly the respitory stuff has been moving in the Bay Area, I would make an appt with your Ped for tomorrow to get her checked out.
My kids have had back to back virus' in the past 10 days...luckily nothing serious as a result but I had C at our pedi twice in the span of 4 days because he had a fever come and go...then two days later come back. Our Dr said she has seen some strange things this cold and flu season.
