I have the fuel band, but know very little about the fit bit.
The fuel band is a glorified pedometer. It also calculates Nike Fuel - so if he has friends on the Nike+ website he wants to compete with, I think that is the only upside.
The screen cycles through time, fuel, calories, steps. I hide the calorie reading as it is useless to me. I have a fuel goal set on Nike+, so I like to see that and I have a step goal on Every Move, so I like to see that. That is about all it tracks.
I have had mine for over a year and it has been fun to compete with friends (until they lose interest) and I am committed to keeping my streak on Nike+ going, so it does get me moving on days that I work at home and am generally very inactive. I recently started syncing with Every Move and have earned some decent rewards, but you can do that with almost any activity tracker.

I have the Fitbit Force, but don't know enough abt the Nike Fuel to compare the two. I have mine synced with MFP. Like the Nike Fuel, it's a glorified pedometer, but it's a fun gadget that keeps me moving throughout the workday so I'm not so sedentary. Mine has time, steps, mileage, stairs, calories, active minutes, and an alarm. There's also a sleep tracking function that I don't use much. I'm not crazy about the clasp on the band, but it works okay enough.
