We are about to get hammered by a catastrophic ice storm. It was 70 degrees on Saturday! I am pretty freaking terrified, mostly because they are warning us of power outages lasting a week or more. Our last major ice storm was in 2004 and our power was out for 5 days. I don't think most people who are used to these storms/don't live here understand how a little bit of ice and/or snow affect us down south. We don't have salt trucks, our entire region has one plow, and our power companies aren't equipped for major outages that accompany these storms. School was cancelled for the rest of the week and roads are shut down except for extreme emergencies. Our grocery store line looked like Splash Mountain... WHY DO PEOPLE BUY 5 GALLONS OF MILK WHEN A STORM EXPECTED GUARANTEED TO KNOCK POWER OUT IS COMING?
Random ramblings from a Georgia girl who is scared of 1 inch of ice. Pray for my sanity and the strength to not freak on H and L over the next few days. AGH.

They were talking about the milk thing last time a storm hit here a few weeks ago and my husband asked the same question.
CW's responding answer? You can keep milk outside in the snow to keep it cold, toddlers might only drink milk so parents may be stocking up if they can't get to the store, and it has fat and calories in it making it better to drink than water when you're burning so many more calories from the cold. Or sumshit.
Our city has mostly shut down already. I think we're supposed to get Georgia's leftover weather tomorrow. Yay ice! I stupidly stopped to pick up a few things yesterday and stood in like for like 20 minutes trying to check out. It was insane.
Wow! I can't believe they've already cancelled school for the rest of the week. I understand the lack of resources, though.
Hopefully you won't lose power at all...or at least for too long. If you can, try to think of it as an adventure with your son. Check Pinterest for lots of good snowed/frozen in ideas to do.
I have a hard time feeling sorry for you Georgia people. A woe is me, but I went 13 days in 2009 without power, in 10 degree and below weather. Isn't it supposed to be like 60 degrees next week. The ice won't stick around to long. Think of it like an adventure.

Didn't Georgia have the big recent screw up of kids stuck at school or on a school bus overnight during an ice storm? It was national news. I could see them being overly cautious with that in recent press.
My parents are in ATL. My mom said she waited in line for an hour+ at Kroger a couple days ago. They're a little more calm about all this given they spend the rest of the year in Michigan and are used to blizzards and ice storms there. They're just hunkering down, which is great because I don't want them on the road even though they have probably driven in worse. I hope you all don't lose power.

I got hit with Irene, the Halloween ice storm, and Sandy and the subsequent power outages. I moved to the south to get away from this shit, I really hope that we don't lose power. At least I'm a pro at this point.
OP, where are you? I just saw on the news that they're reporting sleet on the Cherokee/Cobb line, but it looks like the worst ice is going to be to the east of Atlanta.

The AUG. On the savannah river. It's been sleeting on and off all day.

We sure did. My colleague was on the road for over 14 hours because of how poorly it was handled. Some of my students were at school until 9pm and others ended up spending the night with friends nearby.
We have tornados here, so power loss definitely happens.
They waited until the last minute to close everything and 5 million people tried to get on the highway at once. There were thousands of people stranded. Scary stuff.

I hate that for you, but any day without power is pretty shitty. We are used to 60 degrees in the winter. Don't feel sorry for us... We feel sorry enough for ourselves!
Is Aug Augusta? Ugh, good luck, it looks like you're going to get the brunt of it! I'm in Northern Fulton and it looks like we're getting mostly snow now, but I'm still anxious about the power situation.
Our news anchors keep harping on how bad it's going to be tomorrow and I'm freaked. I'm terrified of losing power.
I'm in Greenville, too. I just saw up to 14". The only thing I'm pissed about is that I won't see my students for over a week and we'll be really behind.

Ha, we're neighbors
GA Power mobilized extra units and they're usually pretty good about getting things up and running quickly.
Us, or you and snorky? I passed by a rescue center set up with tents, 10 generators and over a dozen GA power trucks. My iPhone weather alert is going crazy.
We are supposed to be getting the brunt of it, and that's super rare. Usually, the Savannah keeps us too warm for lots of wintery weather.
@peachesandpinot, I'm in north Fulton. I was getting crazy weather alerts earlier, but my phone is quiet now.
It looks like the moisture from earlier is turning to ice, but nothing really is coming down yet.
I heard it's supposed to be bad even in Statesboro and south. Craziness!
I started college in Statesboro. I see a big night for the bars tomorrow! All 4 bars are smack in the middle of all of the housing. College snow parties are the best!
Just because it could be worse doesn't make it enjoyable to be without power for a day or two.
Ooooh...I am so scared.
It's some ice. Eh.
"Some ice" in a state that only experiences ice/snow once every few years. It would be like Indiana experiencing a hurricane. Ice is scary; a tree fell on my parent's house during our last storm. And yes, I am scared, because I would prefer not to lose power and freeze in a house with a 2 year old.

My parents lived in Atlanta for years. Ice/Snow happens more often than once every few years. If you are seriously scared about ice, I just can't...

Perhaps you'd like to ask the parents of all those kids stuck overnight in schools or on buses last time if they're seriously scared about ice?

Powdered milk got emergencies? Its gross but it can be done.
My SIL is in Cummings. I don't know why they would name a city that. She's from MI do she'snot freaking out except since her H iis OOT and she's not a fan of being a Mom she's not looking forward to being trapped with her kids. She's the one that said I should skip IF tx and buy a boat: She's charming.

Can you buy a generator? Stay safe.
Every single store is out of them and ice salt. It's the icepocalypse!
My aunt lives in Cummings. That name does suck. Lol.

What's that? You're not prepared for weather events that never happen to you? Why, I've never heard that mentioned on every single news and weather report so far this winter when anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line has gotten hit with a snow or ice storm! I thought you guys were lousy with plows and salt!
@peachesandpinot, I'm not understanding some of the responses in this thread. I would be crazy nervous if our power could be out for days. I don't have past experiences to draw from like some of these bootstrap ladies. This thread is cray cray. I never say cray cray, but this thread has made me do it.
I am a little lol at some of these responses. Not having power when it is below freezing is kind of a big deal. Driving on an inch of ice is all but impossible. It's weird stuff to be smug about.
