I'm trying to find somewhere to go within 5 hours of southwest New Hampshire for a short getaway for our first anniversary. I was considering Burlington, VT, Montreal, or Portland, ME but wanted to ask you all if you have a better suggestion. Boston and New York are out. We live on the shore, so beaches aren't really a huge draw.
When is your anniversary? For summer, Portland, ME or Burlington, VT both come to mind. Both are beautiful cities with plenty of romantic inns and nice history. In Burlington you can do some outdoor activities, a lake cruise on Lake Champlain, and drive outside Burlington to visit a maple syrup farm, antique shops, etc. In Portland (assuming it is still summer or very early fall) you can check out the port, lobster boat ride, nearby lighthouses, etc.
We just went to Burlington a few weeks ago and we really enjoyed it.
Montreal is another favorite of ours.
We spent some time at Lake George one summer when we were dating, and then went there for our honeymoon (April ... still nice but much less crowded and a lot of things were closed for the season). Lake Placid is a scenic one-hour drive from LG, too, and the Olympic stuff is cool to see.

The Northern Berkshires are beautiful. You can stay at The Porches, which is very quaint and romantic, but not kitschy. THere are also some small motels that are quirky and fun in Williamstown. You can also get really great houses on vrbo.com or homeaway.com.
Local attractions include wonderful museums- , WIlliams College Museum of Fine Art and Clark Art. You'll be a 20 minute scenic drive from Bennington, VT, where there is more art, and some fun shopping. A little farther north of there is Manchester, VT, which is a town of outlets. Fun for walking and shopping, but also a beautiful drive through the Green Mountains.
Depending on when you go, there is a lot of outside stuff to enjoy. Summer = hiking the Appalachian Trail or the Alpine Slide at Jiminy Peak[/img]. Lots of lakes and picnic opportunities. WInter there is skiing and skating.
You'd also be a short drive to Lee/Lenox/Stockbridge, which are fun New England small towns with a lot of wonderful history. You could also stay in any of these towns in B&Bs, but that are is typically more expensive. Norman Rockwell Museum is fun and there is Tanglewood and other venues for entertainment.
